This is a copy of my paper from the Japanese Association for Digital Humanities 2012 Conference. Since I signed up for a 10 minute paper, I left a lot on the cutting room floor. In the coming weeks...

What would happen if education shifted away from the cohort system that is used to one based on competency? This report looks at this issue in depth. The page that is linked to includes a full report, an executive summary, a link to the infographic (of which part is shown here), and a link to download the infographic. Perhaps the first question to ask is what is competency education? "CompetencyWorks defines competency education as a system of education, often referred to as proficiency or mastery based, in which students advance upon mastery. Competencies include explicit, measurable, transferable learning objectives that empower students. Assessment is meaningful and serves as a positive learning experience for students. Students receive timely, differentiated support tailored to their individual learning needs. Learning outcomes include the application and creation of knowledge, along with the development of important skills and dispositions." For a quick overview check out the infographic, which discusses: * Why Competency? * 10 Design Choices * 10 New Capabilities of a Competency-Aligned System * What Does Competency Education Mean for Students? If 1/3 don't consider social media, then 2/3 must consider it in making business decisions. Not bad for a ~6 year old shift.

This is very interesting when you look at how the Eastern U.S. CEO's are more engaged than those on the Western side. Wonder what that means?

I think it is most interesting that the Western side of the U.S. don't even worry about their online reputation. Wonder when that will change?

"Amazon's idea is that users can sacrifice their right to access "the now-used digital content" and move it to another person's data store.
In some ways, the patent merely describes a digital locker, but one that permits trade and imposes scarcity on the digital goods in order to address questions around the "first sale" doctrine — a legal principle that limits the rights of copyright and trademark owners and allows protected material to be resold." "There’s a huge underserved population today who are consuming content on their phones and we’re giving them a crappy experience. We’re telling them, “Here’s how the web works for you: You have to pinch and zoom your way through sites that were designed for a much larger monitor, you’re going to get errors and the fonts are going to be really tiny.”

"Forget responsive design. The key to multiplatform publishing success is “adaptive content,” argues Karen McGrane in her book, Content Strategy for Mobile.

Jessica Meher at Hubspot has put together a really valuable collection of 15 home page designs to look up to. While the selected designs may not represent your ideal taste or style, they all integrate some of the key critical elements for a home page to be successful. Namely: a. States clearly what the site is about, what problems it offers, who does it talk to b. Uses visuals, possibly representing the object/focus of our interest or some "humans" that are doing what we are interested into c. Provides info bursts that detail what the site is about, what it offers and more. Excellent choices. 8/10 Full guide: http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/34006/15-Examples-of-Brilliant-Homepage-Design.aspx
