Teachers Guide to Teaching Using Social Media

Teachers Guide to Teaching Using Social Media | Social Media 4 Education | Scoop.it

The growing popularity and the pervasive use of social networking websites among our teens and students is a fact we can no longer ignore.

Unfortunately, many school boards  still promulgate laws that inhibit access to these platforms in schools and thus missing on huge learning opportunities for students.

Instead of forcing an unwarranted ban on these media tools why not embrace them and turn them into learning hubs where our students can thrive academically.

Using social media in education has got such a huge potential and there are a variety of ways teachers and schools can leverage the networked power of these tools to help students achieve better.

Here are some of the ideas on how to use social media in class.

The Future of Education: It’s More Sci-Fi Than You Think. - Edudemic | Social Media 4 Education | Scoop.it

For parents right now, the classroom may already seem fairly alien.

When an elementary school student shares their frustration with their Prezi presentation about apartheid, or laments the lameness of their PowerPoint animated transitions, parents know that the world has changed.

When a high school student makes a video accompanied by music and special effects, demonstrating how Ovid’s word choices reveal character, the change is undeniable.

How To Implement Blended Learning - Edudemic

How To Implement Blended Learning - Edudemic | Social Media 4 Education | Scoop.it

Blended learning can be a great way to make use of whatever technology tools you do have, rather than needing specific technology that you don’t have.

Blended learning doesn’t require you to have a 1:1 classroom, a certain number of iPads, or particular software, though you can put any and all of those things toto use as you choose. Thus, blended learning covers a lot of ground – and in the process it helps to make learning more engaging, effective, and efficient.

Plethora of educational gaming sites that are geared towards elementary students. I've used http://funbrain.com and http://abcya.com before with my Kindergartners. A center-orientated system could be effective in getting kids to rotate from computer to computer, entrenching them in different subjects such as reading, writing, spelling, and math.

Celeste Weinstein's curator insight, February 20, 2014 9:51 PM

EDCI397 emphasizes the need for teachers to develop their PLN, and this blog post demonstrates the positive impact these connections can have on the classroom as a whole. Teachers who become connected through social media, such as Twitter or Pinterest, can gain the tools they need to better engage their students. Although I was initially reluctant to use Twitter and other social media as an educational tool, the collaborative opportunities and the chance to help students and their parents connect with the classroom and the world around them made me realize how essential the use of social media in the classroom can be.

Pamela Perry King's curator insight, May 5, 2014 11:06 AM
