Teaching Kids to Curate Content Collections | Social Media 4 Education | Scoop.it

While there are a ton of essential skills that today's students need in order to succeed in tomorrow's world, learning to efficiently manage -- and to evaluate the reliability of -- the information that they stumble across online HAS to land somewhere near the top of the "Muy Importante" list.

This educator describes how Scoop.it can be the tool by which you teach students to gather, manage, and evaluate information. I 100% agree with his caveat at the bottom that Scoop.it doesn't do the teaching but because it is so simple and seamless and allows for so much interaction and feedback between student curator and instructor, it is the perfect medium for it.

But how do I convince them that their students are thirsty for the knowledge they want to share but not the same way that they themselves obtained it?

Technology is only as good as the people who use it. Same as education is only as good as the people who teach. With rapid digital advances in personal computing and social networking, teachers need to adapt just as quickly to put these developments into good use in the classroom.

Technology makes the tools, but what are the general characteristics that make an effective educator a 21st century educator?

“If only I could have learned Spanish three years ago…”

“If only I learned about investing when I was still in my early twenties…”

If only.

For many of us, there are more things we want to learn than we have time for. And as information becomes more readily accessible online, the number of things we want to learn has only increased.

To quote Tony Robbins: "One skill you want to master in this day and age we live in, if you want to have an extraordinary life, is the ability to learn rapidly."

The way we learn is outdated. Schools don’t get it right, and we’re starting to see why.

How much do you remember from your school years? You likely remember more about the people, the places, and the experiences, than you do any of the information from your classes.

The reason is our memory and how it functions.

How digital technology is changing the university lecture

How digital technology is changing the university lecture | Social Media 4 Education | Scoop.it

The idea that teachers should teach and students should listen presumes that teachers know more than their students.

While this was generally true back when textbooks where a rarity, and may have been partly true since the invention of the public library, it is most likely untrue for at least many students in this era of the “active learner” (AKA “digital natives”).
