New ways of Education with Social Media

New ways of Education with Social Media | Social Media 4 Education | Scoop.it

Twitter

Twitter hosts a great population of passionate educators from all walks of life and from all reaches.

I’ve yet to plan a lesson without turning to my Professional Learning Network on Twitter for their input, resources, and advice.

With a decreasing budget and increasing demands on classroom teachers, having access to a tribe of educators on Twitter provides me tools, strategies, and a support system that I can rely on to continually help me to become a better instructional leader and classroom manager.

It’s not just about sharing. Twitter is a place where educators can actively reflect on successes and failures in the classroom while working together to extend what works and improve what doesn’t.

When Not to Use Technology: 15 Things That Should Stay Simple In Education

When Not to Use Technology: 15 Things That Should Stay Simple In Education | Social Media 4 Education | Scoop.it

If we’re going to integrate technology into education successfully, we need to understand the difference between learning “from computers” and learning “with technology.”

When students learn “from computers,” the computers essentially serve as information delivery systems. In this capacity, technology simply presents a student with basic knowledge. Learning “with technology,” by contrast, means using technology as a tool that can be applied to a variety of goals in the learning process.

The point is, educational technology has advanced far beyond what can easily be measured by standardised tests, and if we do not take advantage of this fact, then we are doing our students a disservice.

rodrick rajive lal's curator insight, December 6, 1:30 AM

As and educator, I see so much that is relevant in this writeup! Take for example the first instance, one should not use technology which creates short cuts, so often students would rather the teacher sent important notes on e-mail than take down important notes as the discussion progresses. They just don't want to take the trouble in note taking and writing on their note books! More often than not the very purpose of using technolgy is lost when it is not properly used to enhace creative thinking, and problem solving. Technology becomes an end that is when it becomes deadly! Technology shouldn't be used when it attempts to replace basic skills that our society values, take for example using the calculator on your I phone to do basic calculations. Ironically, I have seen how technology has in fact reduced interaction, making students poor listeners, they simply will not listen to each other. Technology should not be used when it reduces failure. Today we talk about Experiential Learning. For me, personally, experiential learning is about learning from one's experiences, even if it means learning from the pain of failure. You didn't learn to ride a bicycle without falling even once! Often we jump at new technology, we become victims of the Shiny New Tech Syndrome according to the writer of this article! Just because the keyboard looks inviting, it doesn't mean you abandon pen and paper, or even stopped writing notes! The list goes on, and every reason listed in this article is very important. This is a wonderful article, a must read for all progressive Educators!

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, December 6, 11:57 AM

When it undermines deep learning and creates dangerous shortcuts are two excellent points to begin the list with.

Why the Growth Mindset is the Only Way to Learn

Why the Growth Mindset is the Only Way to Learn | Social Media 4 Education | Scoop.it

“You’re too old to learn a foreign language.”

“I couldn’t work on computers. I’m just not good with them.”

“I’m not smart enough to run my own business.”

Do you know what these statements have in common? They’re all examples of the fixed mindset -  the belief that intelligence, ability, and success are static qualities that can’t be changed.

When you have a fixed mindset, you believe that at a certain point, what you have is all you’re ever going to have: You’ll always have a set IQ. You’re only qualified for the career you majored in. You’ll never be any better at playing soccer or dating or taking risks. Your life and character are as certain as a map.

The problem is, this mindset will make you complacent, rob your self-esteem and bring meaningful education to a halt.
