How To Measure the Success of a Blog

How To Measure the Success of a Blog | Social Media, the 21st Century Digital Tool Kit | Scoop.it

I often wonder about how to measure the success of this blog. While there are many tools to measure page views and visitors, the absolute number of readers is probably the worst measure because it's a false idol. Feedburner subscribers, retweets, time on site aren't much better because they don't measure the true performance of a blog - what fraction of a target audience the blog reaches.

In order for content marketing and blogs to be effective, the writing must have a target audience in mind. By focusing on that audience, bloggers build a brand in a scalable and cost-effective way. So engaging the very highest fractions of that audience possible is the best metric of success.

For example, this blog targets startup founders, managers and employees. I journal my education and thoughts in the hopes that others benefit from these learnings. In exchange, I'm trying to build recognition within the startup ecosystem. Each morning, I'd like to log into an analytics dashboard that showed me the fraction of entrepreneurs and startup employees I reached the day before. And ideally, which content resonated and why. Alas, there is no such tool....

4 Twitter campaigns that went horribly wrong | SmartBlogs

4 Twitter campaigns that went horribly wrong | SmartBlogs | Social Media, the 21st Century Digital Tool Kit | Scoop.it

"We all know social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are some of the best marketing tools for a business. But what happens when tweets go wrong?"

Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

EXCELLENT ARTICLE AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY ME.

4 Lessons to be learned on what not to do or expect on your next twitter campaign:

• Do not exploit a tragic event by utilizing product placement in a tweet meant to commemorate it.
• Don't expect your # to send a story where you want it to go. A campaign can take on a life of its own. Interaction is good but the feedback may not be positive.
• Don't SPAM messages, engage and allow users to spread the message themselves. Social Media is for conversation not for billboard advertising space.

• Do not use tweets as blackmail. Guilt is not a tool for marketing.

"Business should avoid using guilt or tragedy to gain awareness of a product." A campaign should look effortless to consumers but invest time and effort to ensure that you avoid the above 4 'NOT TO DOs'.

SMToolbox: Expert Google Plus Tips and Tools | Social Media Today | Social Media, the 21st Century Digital Tool Kit | Scoop.it

As Google+ has over 300m active users (and growing), I am always keen to learn how I can use the platform more effectively. This week, I was very lucky to catch up with Google+ guru Martin Shervington in a Hangout before his talk at Social Media Marketing World. The downside of a Google Hangout was that I could see he was on the sunny West Coast of the US while I was sitting in the dark in London, but on the positive side I learned a huge amount about how to maximise my use of Google+. Martin also shared his advice for people new to the platform.

Intriguing study reveals the secrets of successful infographics

Intriguing study reveals the secrets of successful infographics | Social Media, the 21st Century Digital Tool Kit | Scoop.it
What makes an infographic successful? As designers, we want it to achieve a balance of two main things: Did the reader get the message we wanted them to get?

...To the surprise of the researchers, bar graphs and charts did poorly. It turns out (news flash) they all kinda look the same. The most memorable images contained “human recognizable objects.” Think mundane stuff like photos or illustrations of bottles, animals and shoes, not to mention people.

Other important points:

Color made a huge difference: the more, the better.Images with more clutter were highly memorable. How much more memorable? A lot.Images with lots of circles and rounded corner graphics also ranked high.
