Instead of focusing on social media’s pitfalls and absurdities, let me remind you how it's influence transforms society for the better.
I like this article because its focus is on the 'social' benefits of social media and not the 'business' benefits. It is also written in language that the layman can understand.
Social media has been invaluable in the case of Hurricane Sandy, the worst storm to ever hit parts of Long Island, NY. Facebook has become an invaluable tool resulting in a means of communication, spreading information and fundraising.
I was able to use facebook last year as a resource 'After Sandy' for information both to gather and give to others. Many other people, grassroots groups and organizations found social media invaluable. In fact, social media is still in the forefront for communication since so many people's lives have still not returned to normal.
Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg tried to acquire Twitter not once but twice, through official channels and via co-founder Jack Dorsey.

* There is no "mutual benefit" since minute you figure something that works out they take it away. * Facebook is always about the PROMISE of ROI never actual ROI! I was excited and ready to give Facebook another chance. I'm reading Gary Vanderchuk's Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook and he makes a compelling case for Facebook Sponsored stories. Put the book down and am about to tweet how interesting sponsored stories sounds and I get a Mashable alert that sponsored stories will be eliminated on April 9. Boy have I been to this rodeo before. As a Director of Ecommerce we spent thousands trying to solve the riddle that is Facebook marketing (we never did preferring to give up instead). Why any IMer would spend time and energy on a platform that clearly HATES US is a strange mystery. They hate us because we are spammers, stupid or don't get how to be "native' on their platform. The only reason Facebook gets any time or budget is the promise of a billion connected users with an amazing BI overlay. Problem is if the minute you finally find something that works they eliminate then Facebook wins again and we marketers are stupid indeed. As I point out in this post on GPlus, we are doing our bit. We want to tell great stories, we want to learn how to tell great stories on Facebook and other social platforms. Marketers ARE NOT THE ENEMEY, so please stop treating us as if we are or shame on us for continuing to fund such bad treatment. With the growth of "niche, targeted and closed" social nets most are prediciting for 2014 maybe we will have new ways so share our stories, new ways to learn from our customers and Facebook can do what it does best - let you share pictures of your children with your parents.

A year and a half ago, ancient history in facebook years, a major change took place. Facebook came up with something called, 'Timelines for Business Pages' and their covers have exacting spefications. Those specifications have changed so many times, contradicting and undoing previous versions of them. At one point, I pretty much gave up and renamed, Page Cover Mastery, to Page Cover Mystery.
Facebook isn’t one of the cool kids The reports are coming out that teenagers think Facebook isn’t cool anymore. I think it’s the combination of too many changes with the program, too many companies selling stuff and too many of them seeing their parents (and some are even seeing their grandparents!) using the social networking site. This was not news to me. I heard about this last year when I asked my 13-year-old niece how she likes using Facebook. In her puberty-filled voice she said, “Facebook is weird. We’re not on there anymore. Facebook is for old people like you Aunt Penney.” Gee, thanks kid....
I am not that fond of facebook anymore either. Too much clutter, extraneous material, unnecessary information, unnecessary guideline changes and I could go on. It was a great place to start to learn social media. It provided a good foundation. But it is really time to move on and many of us already have.

The trick to being found by Graph Search will not be in keywords or in a magic optimization formula (although someone will inevitably attempt to reduce it to that). To be found on Facebook, Pages will need to be relevant and engaging enough to be worth finding. In other words your page will need to be truly liked by people to be included in a Graph Search.
