Do you like to strut your stuff when it comes to social media or do you have a tendency to get involved in protracted Twitter debates? Maybe you prefer to stay on the fringes?

Those are just some of the dozen distinct personalities revealed by a research project investigating the extent of the influence of social media in people’s lives.

The survey, conducted by online bank First Direct, found that social media, and the technology we use to access it, could be changing our personalities in quite fundamental ways as some of us exhibit traits very different on social networks to those that we have in the real world.

Dr David Giles, a reader in media psychology at Winchester University, who helped analyse the findings said that mobile devices in particularly have had a big impact not just on the amount of time we spend using social networks but on our personalities....

The Evolution and top 10 game changers of Social Media an infographic | Social Media, the 21st Century Digital Tool Kit | Scoop.it

What did we do before mobile devices? I remember trying to arrange to meet friends when I was a teenager and you never quite knew if they were going to turn up late or not but today it doesn’t matter as you can tweet, Whatsapp, text or even -heaven forbid – actually call them. This enables us all to have that constant always-on access to the internet and stay in touch by our social media channels....

Synopsis:

This article pertains to the issue of how social networking sites like Facebook & Twitter have such great impact on the 21st Century that we're living in. This article also presents the positive aspects of such influence such as diminishing distance and facillitating effective communtication.

Commentary:

As cliche as this may sound, I do subscribe to the notion that social media is a double edged sword. While it could be used to compliment business transactions and strengthen relationships, it could also bring about adverse impacts. With social media, it is inevitable that some users would abuse it by viewing inappropriate sites. Social media could also encourage the act of cyber bullying, which would cause emotional stress to some Internet users.

However, to say that social media is entirely wrong and vile is a biased and hypocritical statement since we ourselves use and frequent them. The pivotal issue is that people of the 21st Century must exercise self responsibility and be cautious of their online conduct. This way, Social Media would be able to achieve it's noble aim of integrating the human race.
