GottaQuirk is a blog focussed on all aspects of digital marketing and is authored by the Quirk team.
I posted this because I love the graphic of all the social media icons placed together.
Are you sure you want to delete this scoop?
"When Jonah Berger was a graduate student at Stanford, in the early aughts, he would make a habit of reading page A2 of the Wall Street Journal, which included a list of the five most-read and the five most-shared articles of the day. “I’d go down to the library and surreptitiously cut out that page,” he recalls. “I noticed that what was read and what was shared was often different, and I wondered why that would be.” What was it about a piece of content—an article, a picture, a video—that took it from simply interesting to interesting and shareable? What pushes someone not only to read a story but to pass it on?"
I am not amazed or infuriated either. But tip #5 is 'use the title as bait'. So this explains that. Here are the six things I was able to extract from Jonah Berger's story. It took me several readings to unearth them. It would have helped if he had made a list (referred to in#3 and #4). In fact, in rereading and now summarizing this post, I realize the author violated just about every one of the valuable suggestions listed below.
Six things to help your story go viral:
1. create ‘social currency’ so people feel ‘in the know’ 2. present a ‘memory inducing trigger’ 3. include a ‘list’ because this is a promise of ‘practical value’ 4. list things in a ‘nice packet of useful information’ 5. use the ‘title as bait’ (with an emotional and arousing title)6. write a ‘quality’ story
Une (petite) leçon à garder en tête pour la diffusion d'information
I think this sums up social media quite nicely:
"The irony, of course, is that the more data we mine, and the closer we come to determining a precise calculus of sharing, the less likely it will be for what we know to remain true. "
Welcome to reality.
Did you know that blogging can help you have a more robust social media presence?
Excellent suggestions presented in simple points with a matching Infographic. Who could ask for more!
If your company (small business) is feeling a bit skeptical about Social Media Marketing, and whether or not it’s worth the effort, then the following infographic highlights 10 reasons why it may be working better than you realise.
From apps to social media to mobile payment processing, doing business in the digital age means staying on top of new trends in technology. But with so many trends to keep track of, it’s easy for businesses to get lost in the shuffle....
Infographics are so much fun. I find it hard to resist scooping them no matter what they are about. This one is about social media and why to use it. A double winner, an infographic and a good topic.
Positive social media is critical for small business.
Proof that social media matters to small business
What did we do before mobile devices? I remember trying to arrange to meet friends when I was a teenager and you never quite knew if they were going to turn up late or not but today it doesn’t matter as you can tweet, Whatsapp, text or even -heaven forbid – actually call them. This enables us all to have that constant always-on access to the internet and stay in touch by our social media channels....
It is hard to believe that some of the social media tools that we use today without giving them a second thought, like brushing our teeth, have a very short history. What did we do before them?
Interesting infographic showing when various services/networks came on board - especially interesting is how quickly things change these days compared to years ago - frightening to think 75 years passed from us getting radio to email!
Copyright is like the hydra, where chopping off one head won’t work. Congress could legalize unlocking phones on Monday, tablets on Tuesday, cars on Wednesday, and a different gizmo every day from now until the end of week let alone year.
Social media, the world of technology, portend the end of ownership. We have already seen this with Pinterest's early days, on facebook and other venues. What should we do/
Why Facebook Sucks For Internet Marketers * The minute you figure something out they eliminate or change it. * They HATE marketers and think we are all spammers.
* There is no "mutual benefit" since minute you figure something that works out they take it away. * Facebook is always about the PROMISE of ROI never actual ROI! I was excited and ready to give Facebook another chance. I'm reading Gary Vanderchuk's Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook and he makes a compelling case for Facebook Sponsored stories. Put the book down and am about to tweet how interesting sponsored stories sounds and I get a Mashable alert that sponsored stories will be eliminated on April 9. Boy have I been to this rodeo before. As a Director of Ecommerce we spent thousands trying to solve the riddle that is Facebook marketing (we never did preferring to give up instead). Why any IMer would spend time and energy on a platform that clearly HATES US is a strange mystery. They hate us because we are spammers, stupid or don't get how to be "native' on their platform. The only reason Facebook gets any time or budget is the promise of a billion connected users with an amazing BI overlay. Problem is if the minute you finally find something that works they eliminate then Facebook wins again and we marketers are stupid indeed. As I point out in this post on GPlus, we are doing our bit. We want to tell great stories, we want to learn how to tell great stories on Facebook and other social platforms. Marketers ARE NOT THE ENEMEY, so please stop treating us as if we are or shame on us for continuing to fund such bad treatment. With the growth of "niche, targeted and closed" social nets most are prediciting for 2014 maybe we will have new ways so share our stories, new ways to learn from our customers and Facebook can do what it does best - let you share pictures of your children with your parents.
The above points about facebook are so true. I have been saying this all along on my Page Cover Mastery, facebook page. http://www. facebook.com/PageCoverMysteryThey make so many changes that I was calling it Page Cover Mystery for a while.
"For a while there, I thought that my career as a graphic designer was over. Keep in mind that I was trained as a BC (before personal computers) designer. First, I had to adjust to the AD (digital age) and then came the mountainous challenge of learning social media. That was actually as hard, if not harder, than architecture school. I did NOT become an architect."
Although I did not become an architect, I have worked in many areas of design both 2 and 3 dimensional. I will always have a fascination for architecture and a feel for graphic design.
Today's television viewers are switched on and engaged. There is interesting behavior around how people use smartphones in relation to what they watch
I doubt that these former couch potatoes get up from the couch. They may move their fingers more, from a TV remote to other devices. Their brains may be more engaged. But they are still sitting on the same part of their anatomy. So instead of being couch potatoes, maybe the are couch sprouts.
A graphic designer trained and working in the field before the advent of desktop publishing has a very different perspective from that of a computer designer/developer today. In fact, graphic design barely resembles what it did 20 years ago.
It is a gift to have become a manual graphic designer first and then a digital graphic designer. I feel that I have tools, perspecitve and an understanding of the field that no one who has only one type of training and experience could have.
Whether you’re circulating a periodic publication or writing a book, WordPress provides an easy way to organize and structure your content while it’s in process. Posts can be kept private while you’re working on finishing the book. Alternatively, you can release installments of your work to the public by publishing them on your WordPress site. This option gives you the benefit of community feedback during the process of writing your book.
Whatever process you choose to enhance your workflow is up to you. WordPress offers the flexibility and tools for any approach and provides several advantages over traditional publishing houses

You may love it, you may hate it, but there’s no ignoring it. It's called social media. Here is some of the worst social media marketing advice to look out for.
…True to human nature, those who’ve tried social media marketing are always willing to part with valuable advice on what to do and what not to do. How much of what they say is based on sound logic is questionable, but when people gather these ‘pearls of wisdom’ and string together a social media marketing strategy that isn’t very productive, we have trouble on our hands.
In this article, I make the attempt to go over a few common practices that may appear harmless but have the potential of sabotaging your social media campaign in the long run. Sounds scary, doesn’t it? If you don’t want that happening to you, stay hooked all the way to the end of the article. It promises to be educational....
Social media is not a fad. It is not a political issue. It is communication just as smoke signals, the telegraph and the traditional telephone have been over time. It is just the next step in communication technology in our time. It is a bit step and more complicated. So we want to learn how best to do it. Read on.
Jeff Bullas provides good advice about the bad social marketing advice out there.
I have created an awesome infographic about the biggest, most important social media moments in 2013.
It is a very cool Infographic. I love Infographics. They are the start of the marriage between digital visual and verbal. Wait until Infographics are dynamic, not static. Have sound, not just words. Push a button, it moves and talks. Info-video-graphics.
Instead of focusing on social media’s pitfalls and absurdities, let me remind you how it's influence transforms society for the better.
I like this article because its focus is on the 'social' benefits of social media and not the 'business' benefits. It is also written in language that the layman can understand.
"Today we are thrilled to announce the release of new version of Paper.li. This latest release is designed to bring publishers numerous benefits such as increased efficiency in curation, promotion and customization and deliver an optimized viewing experience for readers across tablets and mobile devices."
Haven't tried this yet to see how it works. Have you?
New York subway riders first were promised futuristic touchscreen wayfinding maps a year ago. But the plan to install the futuristic infrastructure stalled as the design team took a step back to improve the hardware. Six months overdue, the first batch is finally live in Grand Central Station. They were worth the wait.
Interactive 'touchscreen' subway maps for NYC. Almost worth a visit just to use one.

Many more people, including families with children are relying on food pantries as a staple not just for an emergency? Will food pantries be able to bear the extra burden or with other resources be necessary to feed our increasinly hungry population.

Social media has been invaluable in the case of Hurricane Sandy, the worst storm to ever hit parts of Long Island, NY. Facebook has become an invaluable tool resulting in a means of communication, spreading information and fundraising.
I was able to use facebook last year as a resource 'After Sandy' for information both to gather and give to others. Many other people, grassroots groups and organizations found social media invaluable. In fact, social media is still in the forefront for communication since so many people's lives have still not returned to normal.
One need look no further than the page covers presented by corporate America BEFORE the March 30th 'deadline.
A year and a half ago, ancient history in facebook years, a major change took place. Facebook came up with something called, 'Timelines for Business Pages' and their covers have exacting spefications. Those specifications have changed so many times, contradicting and undoing previous versions of them. At one point, I pretty much gave up and renamed, Page Cover Mastery, to Page Cover Mystery.
"This movie says it all. It is about my visit to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, our photo safari and my adventure with two lovable giraffes, mother and daughter, Chuku and Chamoa."
This video about my venture to the Sand Diego Zoo Safari Park was one of the high lights of my life. Getting kissed by two giraffess had a lot to do with it.
