Mike Allton's curator insight, September 20, 2013 11:29 AM

Are You Listening?

Imagine if you could walk into a crowded networking meeting - one of those Chamber of Commerce events where there are hundreds of business owners and employees - and you could put on a fancy pair of spectacles and immediately identify which people in the room are having conversations you're interested in being a part of. Rather than wander around the room looking for interesting people to talk to, you could immediately approach the people you should be talking to and introduce yourself.

Maybe they're talking about a topic that interests you, or maybe they're asking around for someone that does exactly what you do.

Thanks to social media, you can do that. Right now.

It's called Social Listening and the idea is that you listen for the conversations taking place and questions being posed on social networks, and look for opportunities to engage and connect with those specific people.

Todays' article is all about social listening - for customer service, for prospecting, for brand management - and all about how to use +HootSuite to make the process as easy and efficient as possible. We're continuing our #HootSuiteSeries  with How to use HootSuite for Social Listening.

If you'd like to learn more about the concept, or how to use the HootSuite tool to accomplish it, please check out the article and let me know what you think, what questions you have.

If you're already doing Social Listening for your business, what tips or questions do you have? What's working for you, or what isn't?

Thanks, and have a GREAT weekend!

Google Authorship - are we there yet?

Google Authorship - are we there yet? | Social Marketing Strategy | Scoop.it
Within a year from now Google will be able to gather information from all traces of someone online and establish whether or not they are in fact, authorities. Will you be ready?

Mike Allton's curator insight, October 3, 2013 11:49 AM

“Well, we don’t use Authorship for ranking.”

That was the statement from Google's John Mueller during a Hangout last week when discussing Google's latest algorithm update, Hummingbird.

He goes on to say that Google tries to recognize the original source for content and wants to treat it accordingly. But what does that mean?

Guest author +Kapil Jekishan takes us through what, if any, conclusions can be gleaned from these comments and the most recent algorithm update. Most importantly, Kapil tries to answer the questions:

1. What direction is Authorship going?
2. What steps should bloggers and site owners take?

According to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, “The true cost of remaining anonymous, then, might be irrelevance.” Make sure that you're keeping abreast of these changes and developments!

If you have questions about Google Authorship, what are they? If I don't know the answer, we'll ping someone who does.

Glam is another large scale example on how content curation is increasingly important in the content mix, even for major media companies.

Your goal with Instagram is to reinforce your brand message and build relationships with your audience as you do. The better you build a network on Instagram, the more opportunities you create to promote your products and brand—and with an audience receptive to what you have to say.

People like pictures more than they like words.

People like unique pictures more than they like boring pictures.

Instagram, Toaster, Snapseed and other apps make boring pictures interesting.
