Abstract

A variety of scholars have explored the role of communication in reducing, maintaining, and even widening health disparities, but comparatively less attention has focused on the content and effects of communication about health disparities in the mass media. This article aims to summarize the current state of knowledge about these issues by identifying key outcomes and audiences for mass-mediated communication about health disparities, describing what is known about public opinion about health disparities, reviewing selected research on the content and effects of mass-mediated communication about health disparities, and identifying priorities for future research to better understand the role of communication in shaping public support and collective action to reduce health disparities.

‘Gamification’: Influencing health behaviours with games

Every month at Google Campus in London, dozens of software developers, clinicians, behavioural scientists and investors get together to discuss new strategies to influence health behaviours. The collective aim of these networking events is to develop digital ‘games with purpose’ that can improve health by integrating software design and game mechanics with public health theory and behavioural insights. Gamification is a purposely-broad umbrella term used to encompass the process of using ‘gaming’ elements to motivate and engage people in non-game contexts.1 Enhanced opportunities now exist to deliver behaviour change interventions through game platforms on new smartphone devices.

Understanding differences in health behaviors by education

Abstract

Using a variety of data sets from two countries, we examine possible explanations for the relationship between education and health behaviors, known as the education gradient. We show that income, health insurance, and family background can account for about 30 percent of the gradient. Knowledge and measures of cognitive ability explain an additional 30 percent. Social networks account for another 10 percent. Our proxies for discounting, risk aversion, or the value of future do not account for any of the education gradient, and neither do personality factors such as a sense of control of oneself or over one's life.

WHO - Fortification of condiments and seasonings with vitamins and minerals in public health: from proof of concept to scaling up

WHO is currently working on the development of global guidelines on fortification of several staple foods with vitamins and minerals as part of public health programmes. Food fortification at the industrial level has been considered as a safe and cost-effective strategy to prevent vitamin and mineral malnutrition in populations. Industry-based mass fortification aims to reach larger populations at a minimum marginal cost, particularly when produced by medium to large scale industries.

New figures from Australia have shown that the prevalence of smoking among adults fell by 15% in the second half of 2013, from 15.1% to 12.8%, a year after standardised packaging was introduced in December 2012.In the UK smoking rates are going down, but we’ve still a long way to go. Half of all long term users will die from smoking, and reducing the number of young people who start smoking must remain a focus in the UK. Standardised packaging is key to protecting children from tobacco marketing, and it would be a great health legacy for this parliament to make it a reality without delay.”

Anyone who has observed someone deeply absorbed in a video game can appreciate that use of these games is a uniquely powerful interaction. For the player, time stands still and self-consciousness disappears. Csikszentmihalyi described this state as “flow.”1 His concept was exemplified by mountain climbers living in the moment of ascent or surgeons lost in a delicate and demanding task. He could just as well have been describing what happens when individuals engage with some of today's interactive games.

In 2011, Emmanuel Nnaemeka Nnadi needed help to sequence some drug-resistant fungal pathogens. A PhD student studying microbiology in Nigeria, he did not have the expertise and equipment he needed. So he turned to ResearchGate, a free social-networking site for academics, and fired off a few e-mails. When he got a reply from Italian geneticist Orazio Romeo, an inter­national collaboration was born. Over the past three years, the two scientists have worked together on fungal infections in Africa, with Nnadi, now at Plateau State University in Bokkos, shipping his samples to Romeo at the University of Messina for analysis. “It has been a fruitful relationship,” says Nnadi — and they have never even met.

Overweight and obesity are linked to 10 common cancers and more than 12 000 UK cases

Being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing 10 of the most common cancers, a large study using data from primary care has found.1

Every year more than 12 000 cases of these 10 types of cancer are attributable to high body mass index (BMI), the researchers calculated. And they estimated that, if the average BMI in the United Kingdom continues to increase, more than 3500 extra cancers could result every year.

Krishnan Bhaskaran, a postdoctoral fellow at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine who led the study, said, “The number of people who are overweight or obese is rapidly increasing, both in the UK and worldwide. The first, second, and fifth of these you'll be more than familiar with.

 

It's the third one that gets less attention, namely economics and anthropology. There's something of a tension between the two definitions as they appear in the article as I read it, with the former wishing to incentivise a positive, self-responsible individualism in health, and the latter (also the fourth item on the list) promoting the importance of institutions in supporting such an attitude, which could be said to contradict one another.

 

However, for all of its indeterminacy I'd argue that there are progressive ways to align these positions directly and indirectly; the theme merits more discussion.

Article focus

The use of social media in healthcare has been widely advocated, but there is little evidence describing the current state of the science and whether or not these tools can be used to benefit patient populations.

We mapped the state of the existing literature evaluating the use of social media in patient and caregiver populations.

Key messages

There is an extensive and rapidly growing body of literature available investigating the use of social media in patient and caregiver populations.

Most studies have been descriptive; however, with such widespread use, evaluations of effectiveness are needed.

In studies that have examined effectiveness, positive conclusions are often reported, despite the non-significant findings.

Strengths and limitations of this study

Our search was comprehensive and we included an extensive body of literature, across conditions, populations and study designs.

Social media is constantly evolving, leading to challenges in keeping the search updated.

A more in-depth analysis is needed on specific topics, conditions and populations to guide the use and implementation of social media interventions.

Good to see the impact of socical media in health care reviewed.
What maybe "non-sginificant" to reserach in statistic perspective, might not be the same as relevance in view of personal meaning ! ;-)

Still a lot to go, specifcally in the direction of impact on personal satisfaction, behaviour and health outcomes.. (see the discussion paragraph)
