In the broken and disused spaces of a faltering industrial giant, one designer and architecture professor is sowing the seeds of an entrepreneurial rebirth.
In this paper we propose the creation of a Social Innovation Change Lab, what such a permanent process would entail and what it would aim to achieve. We discuss the multiple theoretical origins of Change or Design Labs, as the confluence of group dynamics and group psychology, complexity theory, design, and computer modelling and visual language. Change Labs provide a physical and intellectual space designed to encourage and facilitate cooperation and the co-creation of meaningful and innovative solutions to complex problems. We discuss the previous and current use of Change or Design Labs, and the possibilities contained in recent and ongoing advancement of visualizing and modelling technologies, with an eye to how a social innovation-oriented Change Lab would fit a genuine need to develop novel solutions to complex problems.

Creative thinking deserves a much higher priority in education curricula, according to college-educated professionals surveyed in new research released today by Adobe. The U.S. study, Creativity and Education: Why it Matters, sheds new light on the role of creativity in career success and the growing belief that creativity is not just a personality trait, but a learned skill. Based on the study, 85% percent of respondents agree creative thinking is critical for problem solving in their career, and 68% of respondents believe creativity is a skill that can be learned. Nearly three-quarters (71%) say creative thinking should be “taught as a class – like math or science.” adobe.ly/RICbIg

On June 19th 2012 it was announced that 10 million guest nights had been booked on Airbnb, an online service that matches people seeking short-term accommodation with people who have rooms to rent. This is one example of a market for the sharing of goods and services between peers, or 'collaborative consumption.' It is a concept with a long history that is re-emerging on an unprecedented scale due to a confluence of factors. With pressing environmental concerns intensifying, various groups have queried what form consumerism will take in the future. Some have pointed to the significant role that collaborative consumption could play by enabling re‐use, re‐cycling and re‐purposing.

The Harvard Graduate School of Design released its Ecological Urbanism app last month. The interactive app adapts content from the GSD book of the same name, which explores how designers can unite urbanism with environmentalism.
Combining data from around the world, the app “reveals and locates current practices, emerging trends, and opportunities for new initiatives” in regard to the future of cities.
A collaboration between the school and Second Story Interactive Studios, the app stems from the GSD’s Ecological Urbanism conference and dovetails with the duo’s ongoing efforts to explore sustainability in our cities of the future. More than 100 participating architects and designers have provided content for the project, including such heavyweights as OMA, Rem Koolhaas, Kara Oehler, and Stefano Boeri.
