Keep spreading the word on social media. So many projects start but merit more replication. Now is the time.
Ten years ago, Los Angeles billionaire Jeff Skoll founded Participant Media to make films and TV shows that spark social change. Now he wants to inspire the next generation of entertainers to follow in his footsteps.
Today, Skoll announced a $10 million endowment to launch an eponymous Center for Social Impact Entertainment at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. The first-of-its-kind hub will host workshops, lectures and visiting artists, as well as fund research to measure the impact of socially minded storytelling. It will also hold public events and exhibits. In addition, starting next year, the Center and Participant Media will convene artists, government officials, academics and business and nonprofit leaders for an annual event on storytelling as a tool for social change.
“I founded Participant Media in the belief that a story well-told has the power to ignite positive social change,” Skoll said in a statement. “This new center at UCLA TFT is an extension of that vision, with the goal of empowering a new generation, and elevating storytelling as a tool to create impact and empower people to connect to the social issues which can have a profound impact on our world.”

"Around here, we’re generally sympathetic to Occupy Wall Street’s goals. As one pessimistic commentator put it, at least they’re yelling at the correct buildings. And we have great familiarity with indebted Americans—having been one until recently, and now helping a close relative deal with aggressive debt purchasers. So I empathize with the goals of Strike Debt’s Rolling Jubilee project.
Rolling Jubilee proposes to purchase consumer debt on the open market for pennies on the dollar—just like hedge funds do every day—and then find the debtors and forgive their debts. The project has already garnered roughly $500,000 in contributions, which would purchase $10 million of consumer debt.
Rolling Jubilee wants to surprise the individual debtors with their forgiveness—you may be a winner! People like the idea of playing Santa Claus to beleaguered debtors. Rolling Jubilee has begun sending outforgiveness letters to debtors. The letters are packaged as gifts. (more)
