Social Entrepreneurship in China: A Resource Guide | By Xing Hu

Social Entrepreneurship in China: A Resource Guide | By Xing Hu | Social Entrepreneurship in Europe and China | Scoop.it

At the (past) Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University, where I manage the Nonprofits in China program, I am regularly approached by students who are interested or  already involved in “doing good” in China.

One Harvard international student from China sees his involvement in volunteering and starting nonprofits since high school in China as key to his admission to Harvard. Speaking of the amazing personal and professional growth he achieved through his experiences, he once said to me, “The water of doing good runs deep!”

He is right. It takes courage, perseverance, empathy and compassion, a sense of responsibility, and openness to learning to be willing to volunteer or create something new. In the context of China, an understanding of the burgeoning sphere of doing good is also important.

In this section, I would like to guide you through the most common approaches to doing good in China and introduce you to resources for becoming involved.

Andreas Fulda's insight:

This article provides a lot of very useful links for all those among you who would like to get involved with social enterprises in China

Challenges for the third sector – a serious look in the mirror

Challenges for the third sector – a serious look in the mirror | Social Entrepreneurship in Europe and China | Scoop.it
Professor John Thompson outlines seven 'big picture' challenges that the third sector can't ignore...
Andreas Fulda's insight:

I very much agree with Professor Thompson's emphasis on the need to pay greater attention to individual social entrepreneurs. In addition, I would argue that we should be talking more about the art of social entrepreneurship. I am particularly interested in learning how individuals solve social problems in an innovative way. What I have realised over time is that founders of social enterprises are not able to achieve their objectives by themselves. Apart from the support they receive from funders, mentors, volunteers, academics etc they often need to cooperate with other stakeholders and engage in what I would call collective social entrepreneurship. As such we may want to look at the role of individuals, groups, organisation and networks when trying to assess the functions and utiltity of a given social enterprise.

Why are more women leading social businesses? | The Guardian

Why are more women leading social businesses? | The Guardian | Social Entrepreneurship in Europe and China | Scoop.it
Research suggests that some female traits may be behind their choice to become social entrepreneurs
Andreas Fulda's insight:

When I asked this question to Professor Guo Hong from the Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences in Chengdu, China during the filming of the documentary series "Stewards of the Social Environment" she replied to my question this way: "We have found out that women have been particularly active among NGOs in Sichuan and across the nation. Why would this happen? I think it might be because women tend to have a stronger sense of human care. Meanwhile, since women are mothers, they might be more sympathetic with and have more humane care for ordinary people, nature, and the whole society [author's translation]." I think Professor Guo makes a valid point about the social skills of women. But maybe there is something else at play. Research has shown that the traditional labour market in China is still heavily in favour of men and that women are being paid less than men even when doing the same job. My understanding is that many Chinese women become socially entrepreneurial in order to level the playing field, to carve out a niche for themselves. So in a sense social business or social enterprises are good vehicles to build up a career unhampered by gender discrimination. What do you think? Your comments are welcome

This could also be a way forward for the many aspiring social enterprises in Europe and China. A greater virtual presence will help social enterprises being better recognised by staff, volunteers, service users, donors, policy makers and the general public alike.
