Mental health problems aren’t all in the brain | Clare Allan

Mental health problems aren’t all in the brain | Clare Allan | Social Emotional Wellbeing & Learning | Scoop.it
Divorcing mental ill health from its social and political context, as the BBC’s recent In the Mind Series did, implies wider issues of inequality or poverty don’t matter
Steve Hughes's insight:
We need to see mental health through a multifaceted contextual lens. The individual is a context and their biological functioning is one dimension of that context. So is their developmental status, personal history and behavioural and cognitive patterns. But everyone is immersed in a broad range of other contexts as Bronfenbrenner pointed out.
We need explore contexts that contribute to mental health and explore the contextual risk and protective factors in order to generate an holistic perspective of individuals and group at risk of mental health problems and or illness.

The brain is an amazing and powerful organ. Even the brain without a context can't do anything. Sick or well, impaired or damaged or diseased of entirely functional, the brain needs the rest of the body and the body needs a context too - its called living on planet earth.

Taskforce calls for people facing crises to get 24/7 support including intensive home treatment and for suicide rates to be reduced by 10%

Steve Hughes's insight:

“For too many, especially black, Asian and minority ethnic people, their first experience of mental health care comes when they are detained under the Mental Health Act, often with police involvement, followed by a long stay in hospital,” Farmer and the taskforce’s vice-chair, Jacqui Dyer, a counsellor, mental health service user and carer, state in the report’s foreword.

This is such a traumatising experience for many people!

No Courses, No Classrooms, No Grades — Just Learning

No Courses, No Classrooms, No Grades — Just Learning | Social Emotional Wellbeing & Learning | Scoop.it
NuVu is a full-time magnet innovation center for middle and high school students. NuVu’s pedagogy is based on the architectural Studio model and geared around multi-disciplinary, collaborative projects. We basically teach students how to navigate the messiness of the creative process, from inception to completion.

No Courses: Instead, we have studios. Around 12 kids work closely with their 2 coaches on solving big (and small) open-ended problems.

No Subjects: Instead, everything is fused together. Students find themselves moving between a studio that requires them to design a telepresence robot to another that requires them to re-imagine Boston with a cable car system.

No Classrooms: Instead, we have an open space that changes all the time to adapt to the needs of every studio.

No One-Hour Schedule: Instead, students spend two weeks from 9-3 solving one problem.

No Grades: Instead, we have portfolios that document students’ design decisions and show their final products.

CEBC » Topic › Interventions For Abusive Behavior

CEBC » Topic › Interventions For Abusive Behavior | Social Emotional Wellbeing & Learning | Scoop.it

Scientific ratings of evidence base are great but don't right off interventions on the basis that they don't have a top rating. There are plenty of good interventions that don't have a significant evidence base. I think there is is just more that a rating number to consider when matching client needs and strategies.

Steve Hughes's insight:

There are assumptions behind every measurement tool we create. I downloaded the Child Exposure to Domestic Violence Scale found that the quenstions only asked about 'Moms' being hurt by their partners. Domestic violence is a complex relational pattern. I was left wondering if this device oversimplified things leaving the author's epistemological slip clearly on show.

In recent years, the idea that educators should be teaching kids qualities like grit and self-control has caught on. Successful strategies, though, are hard to come by.
