Management’s Three Eras: A Brief History - We've entered the age of empathy. (Harvard Business Review)

Management’s Three Eras: A Brief History - We've entered the age of empathy. (Harvard Business Review) | Emotional Intelligence and Social Emotional Learning | Scoop.it

We’ve entered the age of empathy.

Today, we are in the midst of another fundamental rethinking of what organizations are and for what purpose they exist. If organizations existed in the execution era to create scale and in the expertise era to provide advanced services, today many are looking to organizations to create complete and meaningful experiences.

I would argue that management has entered

a new era of empathy.

This quest for empathy extends to customers, certainly, but also changes the nature of the employment contract, and the value proposition for new employees. We are also grappling with widespread dissatisfaction with the institutions that have been built to date, many of which were designed for the business-as-machine era. They are seen as promoting inequality, pursuing profit at the expense of employees and customers, and being run for the benefit of owners of capital, rather than for a broader set of stakeholders. At this level, too, the challenge to management is to act with greater empathy.

Susan Stillman's insight:

So, let's be proactive and teach empathy and other competencies of emotional intelligence  to MBA students, med students, law school students (what a thought!), teacher candidates, educational leaders,  and other professional in training. They,  in turn, would be using these skills in their interactions with their students, or staffs,  or clients going forward. What an impact that would have, not just corporations/customers but on all of society. That would be a new era indeed!

Using Dialogue Circles to Support Classroom Management

Using Dialogue Circles to Support Classroom Management | Emotional Intelligence and Social Emotional Learning | Scoop.it
At Glenview Elementary School, dialogue circles are part of a program aimed at building collaboration, respect, and positive behavior among students.
Susan Stillman's insight:

There's been a lot of talk about Circles recently and I can see a huge connection to Social Emotional Learning and classroom climate. I attended a conference at the Morningside Center in NYC, where Kay Pranis shared her experience with circles. I realized with amazement, that whenever I have been referring to  "class meetings", it's really the power of Circles that I am speaking to. Circles are a way to check-in, focus, share joys and challenges, resolve issues, and insure that all students are seen and heard. Circles are inclusive. Circles allow the class members  and their teacher to share feelings, develop empathy and exercise optimism. It's a time to be mindful. It's a time to develop all our EQ competencies while talking about things that are meaningful to the the group.  One important point is that the teacher shares power with the students, as all are equal in a circle. Stay tuned for a free webinar on Circles that I will be leading at 6Seconds.org or contact me for more information!

Dialogue Circles are a wonderful way to strengthen the social and emotional skills of all students.  It encourages respect and appreciation for differences in thought and perspectives.  Culture Circles are also a great strategy to teach these skills.

Susan Stillman's insight:

Here's a great new book by my friend,  Tish Jennings---she explores mindfulness in its absolutely appropriate context of social emotional learning. She writes that all teaching and learning is emotional at its center and classrooms are incredibly complex with social interactions and continual emotional experiences. She adds that teachers can apply mindfulness to better understand their students' emotions, behavior and learning.  Knowing Tish, I would add that this book will help educators understand these same issues in themselves.

The Neuroscience Behind Stress and Learning

The Neuroscience Behind Stress and Learning | Emotional Intelligence and Social Emotional Learning | Scoop.it

The highest-level executive thinking, making connections, and "aha" moments of insight and creative innovation are more likely to occur in an atmosphere of what Alfie Kohn calls exuberant discovery, where students of all ages retain that kindergarten enthusiasm of embracing each day with the joy of learning.

Susan Stillman's insight:

I like the idea that teachers create classrooms ripe with "exuberant discovery." When teachers practice the skills of emotional intelligence, and follow the Self-Science learning process, they can more readily create a classroom that's a great place to learn!

Susan Stillman's insight:

It's so important to recognize that teachers have their own emotional needs and challenges and that to support students, teachers must have their own emotions validated. Once that happens, with assistance, such as the Six Seconds framework, they can begin to develop self-awareness and make better choices, rekindling the passion they felt when they started teaching. The same holds true for school counselors--I have been there!

Six Habits of Highly Empathetic People

Six Habits of Highly Empathetic People | Emotional Intelligence and Social Emotional Learning | Scoop.it
We can cultivate empathy throughout our lives, says Roman Krznaric—and use it as a radical force for social transformation.
Susan Stillman's insight:

Roman Krznaric shares insights on how we can make empathy a part of our daily lives and how that influences the lives of all those around us. The six steps are powerful tools...I am working now on "Listen Hard--and Open Up." Krznaric emphasizes that listening is never enough.  "The second trait is to make ourselves vulnerable. Removing our masks and revealing our feelings to someone is vital for creating a strong empathic bond. Empathy is a two-way street that, at its best, is built upon mutual understanding—an exchange of our most important beliefs and experiences."

SPCA teaches animal empathy at summer camp in Victoria

SPCA teaches animal empathy at summer camp in Victoria | Emotional Intelligence and Social Emotional Learning | Scoop.it

While the BCSPCA is well known for teaching animal care and safety at its youth camps, it’s hoping children will walk away with another important skill this summer — empathy.

The group’s Among Animals summer camp program, created last year, runs for a week and is open to ages six and seven.

“That’s the age when we really have to start teaching them about empathy,”

said Breeanna McDonald, camp co-ordinator. “They’re interested in animals, a lot of them have pets at home, but they haven’t started thinking about the animals’ point of view.”

by  Drew McLachlan -

Via Edwin Rutsch
Susan Stillman's insight:

It's a great idea that I hope is repeated everywhere!  Kindness to animals, and teaching kids to not abuse them is beyond critical. Animal abuse is heartbreaking. Teaching kids empathy saves lives. And,  as this story implies, it not only about empathy to animals but about learning to practice empathy in many different contexts.
