How Large Is Your Network? The Power of 2nd and 3rd Degree Connections

How Large Is Your Network? The Power of 2nd and 3rd Degree Connections | Social and political dynamics | Scoop.it
Imagine you receive a digital camera with a built-in memory card for your birthday. You bring it on a six-month trip to Africa where you won’t have access to a computer—so all the photos
Henry Curtis's insight:

Thank you Reid, this was an interesting and insightful article. We have moved from 6 degrees of separation to 3 degrees of separation, and the tool which moved us there is the computer. I wonder how our growing psychological and physical dependence on computers is going to impact on the number of levels of separation over the next ten years? And somehow it seems to me that the more we "network" by computer, the less time we have for our fellow human beings...

How to Develop Social Awareness

How to Develop Social Awareness | Social and political dynamics | Scoop.it
Developing social awareness involves learning about the dynamics of social relationships between individuals, groups and communities. A socially aware individual values human rights and acknowledges the importance of harmonious social...
Henry Curtis's insight:

I was intrigued not so much by the article as by the concept of WikiHow... this is really grassroots stuff, with the attendant dangers, but I admire people's propensity to try to help each other...

How HR Uses Social Media to Screen Candidates [INFOGRAPHIC] | The Savvy Intern by YouTern

How HR Uses Social Media to Screen Candidates [INFOGRAPHIC] | The Savvy Intern by YouTern | Social and political dynamics | Scoop.it
It's true... more recruiters now use social media as their first filter to narrow down the pool of candidates. At more and more companies – before you ever ge...
Henry Curtis's insight:

I'm not sure I believe the bit about Facebook and Twitter (it may say more about the demographics of the searchers rather than the sites!), but this does demonstrate clearly that recruiters are using a multi-pronged approach to finding out about you, so you need to stay in control of which prongs they're seeing!

Is Behavioral Economics Really a Game Changer for Marketers?

Is Behavioral Economics Really a Game Changer for Marketers? | Social and political dynamics | Scoop.it
Welcome to the CMA - Canadian Marketing Association - Blog. This Blog is an initiative of the CMA Digital Marketing Council.
Henry Curtis's insight:

A useful summary of behavioural economics, although Bernstein decides in the penultimate paragraph that the answer to his question is "yes and no", which doesn't get the reader much further in my humble opinion.

The YouTube link at the end to Rory Sutherland, the President of the IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) and Vice-Chair of Ogilvy, is also well worth listening to if you have a spare 11 minutes, although he is somewhat Cambridge...

What Can CMOs Learn From Neuroscience? - Forbes

What Can CMOs Learn From Neuroscience? - Forbes | Social and political dynamics | Scoop.it
At the center of every CMO challenge is an effort to try and figure out how to generate growth.  Driving growth requires understanding the consumer and what impacts their behavior.
Henry Curtis's insight:

At the heart of behaviour there lies psychology (thank you Daniel Kahneman!)... and there is an increasing number of fascinating books out there at the moment taking cognitive psychology to the level of neuroscience (thank you David Rock et al).

Understanding the Federal Debt » Dispatches from the Culture Wars

Understanding the Federal Debt » Dispatches from the Culture Wars | Social and political dynamics | Scoop.it
The National Memo has an article from ProPublica (the very best of the non-profit news organizations, winning two consecutive Pulitzer prizes and deserving them very much) that explains the federal debt, what the inputs are ...
Henry Curtis's insight:

We should apply intelligence to public statements and try and "deconstruct" them to make them meaningful. This is a great illustration... and for those of us in Canada who think the US looks awful with public debt at 67.7% of GDP, you should know that public debt in Canada amounts to 87.4% of GDP, from the same source, the CIA Worldbook... but the US figure doesn't include debt at the State or Provincial level...

Eurozone debt crisis: the key charts you need to understand what's happening | Social and political dynamics | Scoop.it
Europe is in crisis - but what's going on? Which are the right key numbers to compare each country?
Henry Curtis's insight:

We need facts, not politicians, if we want to understand what's going on... even if the facts are politicized, they should make people marginally more intellectually honest...
