The latest instalment of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC) global entertainment and media outlook indicates that digital advertising revenues will surpass those of TV within the next four years. The 2014-18 report charts a global rise in digital advertising from 14 per cent of total spend in 2009 to 25 per cent last year. PwC expects it to reach 33 per cent by 2018. Non-digital advertising revenue is set to rise at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of just below 2 per cent during the forecast period. Asia-Pacific is the world’s third-largest online advertising region, with revenue of around US$31 billion. That number is due to swell to nearly US$57 billion over the next four years.

(Insights) An interesting perspective on how FMCG brands should use social media. Mondelez Europe’s head of social and digital media Sonia Carter claims that for FMCG brands social media is just another broadcast channel like TV. What matters is that consumers SEE content, not engage with it. However, in order to get the kind of reach that it takes for broadcast-style marketing to be effective on social media channels, you'll have to pay for advertising.

Several years ago, while I was still largely a "traditional" PR guy, I sent an ill-advised email of talking points to someone I didn't know very well. The email was forwarded to a blogger, and I ended up getting publicly embarrassed. This story is a good reminder to those of us working on influencer and blogger relations campaigns to target our pitches carefully.

Gamification is underutilized as a social media marketing tool in Vietnam. Perhaps it's time for Vietnamese marketers to take a look. Gamification is especially good for product categories that benefit the most from loyalty and referrals: automotive, B2B, and paid digital memberships.

After years of chasing Facebook fans and Twitter followers, many companies now stress quality over quantity in their social-media strategies. They are tracking mentions of their brand, then using the information to help the business.
Jason Lusk's insight:

(Insights) This is a contrarian perspective on social media marketing's effectiveness in North America. I hope marketers will not read this and say, "This is great. Now I can stop worrying about how to market on social media." Instead, I hope they focus on three key findings and focus their strategies accordingly:

1. The number of fans and followers you have doesn't matter. What matters is the quality of your relationship with them. 

2. Social media is not a great broadcast mass marketing channel. TV, radio and outdoor still work better. Ads in social media can complement ads in other media to improve frequency, but Facebook ads are no substitute for other forms of mass market advertising.

3. Marketers are most effective in social media when they interact with their customers. Interactions can take the form of listening (using social media as a research tool), engagement (helping and responding to individual customers in a helpful and transparent way), or utility (providing tools and content that improve users' lives in a meaningful way and make them feel grateful to the brand.
