1st International Workshop on Socially Intelligent Computing (SINCOM 2012) Part of the OnTheMove OTM Federated Conferences and Workshops 2012 (OTM'12) Rome, Italy, 13 - 14 September 2012 Proceedings will be published by Springer Verlag
IMPORTANT DATES Abstract Submission deadline: May 18, 2012 Paper Submission deadline: May 25, 2012
The International Workshop on Socially Intelligent Computing (SINCOM) provides a forum on the study, design, development and evaluation of the emergent intelligence that human-computer systems demonstrate. Socially intelligent computational systems bring together people and computers, support the creation of radically new forms of collaboration, communication and intelligence and allow the generation of new, emergent behaviors. Socially Intelligent Computing research is closely related to two other areas of research: “social computing”, i.e. the design and use of information and communication technologies that consider social context; and to the field of “collective intelligence”, i.e. systems that facilitate the collective behavior of groups of individual actors – people, computational agents, and organizations – and exhibit intelligent characteristics such as perception, learning, judgment, or problem solving.
A paper by researchers from University of California at Riverside and Yahoo! Research Barcelona presented at the ACM International Conference on Web Search and Data Mining (WSDM) 2012 examined the correlation of micro-blogging activity with stock-market events.
The paper shows that even relatively small correlations between price and micro-blogging features can be exploited to drive a stock trading strategy that outperforms baseline strategies.

Transparency Life Sciences (TLS), a biopharmaceutical development company based in the US, has marked its official launch by unveiling a prototype of the crowdsourced web platform it will use to design clinical trial protocols more in tune with the needs of patients, physicians, medical experts and other stakeholders.
A new report from the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM), the global community of information professionals, describes three scenarios on social business written by Andrew McAfee (who coined the term Enterprise 2.0 in a 2006 article for MIT's Sloan Management Review).
The scenarios concern: Open innovation, knowledge sharing through online Q&As, and improving collaboration between sales and marketing.
Social business is a loaded term, and an increasingly popular one. Do you really know what it means? Do you know where the core value of a social business lies? The infographic below will help.

Intl. Workshop on Social Media Applications in News and Entertainment Monday April 16th, 2012, Lyon, France
Paper Submission date: 1 February 2012
The aim of this workshop is to encourage discussion and sharing of ideas and research results on social media research, techniques, and applications, in two crucial areas: News and Entertainment. The workshop offers an opportunity to promote interdisciplinary research and exchange of ideas in this area, not only between industry and academia, but also between different fields (e.g., computer science, journalism, psychology, sociology, economics, history, cultural anthropology, business, etc.). These two application areas have received the most impact from social media technologies, and yet, there are many technical and social challenges.
"Geoffrey Moore’s concept of systems of record versus systems of engagement lays out two distinct but complementary information systems that businesses need to think about in the current era. First came systems of record — enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, product lifecycle management, and all the other enterprise applications responsible for the productivity gains in the latter part of the last century. Then, with so-called consumerization of IT, came systems of engagement, a complex of communication and collaboration tools and platforms that will enable the next wave of productivity gains".
Most commentary on social media ignores an obvious truth—that the value of things is largely determined by their rarity. The more people tweet, the less attention people will pay to any individual tweet. The more people “friend” even passing acquaintances, the less meaning such connections have. As communication grows ever easier, the important thing is detecting whispers of useful information in a howling hurricane of noise.
The 2012 International Workshop on Social Computing, Network, and Services (SocialComNet 2012) http://www.ftrai.org/socialcomnet2012 Vancouver, Canada, June 26-28, 2012 (in Conjunction with FutureTech 2012). SocialComNet-2012 aims at reporting the most recent progresses, trends, and concerns in this rapidly growing area.
This workshop will provide a forum for participants from the computing and social science communities and publish state-of-art research papers. Furthermore, we expect that the workshop and its publications will trigger related research and technology innovation in this important subject.

The world is changing and needs Social Business Architects. Gone is the epoch of the passive consumer, now customers want a say.
At the same time, the quest for survival and growth is causing companies to stop looking at suppliers as someone to squeeze on price and instead as partners in innovation. And, employers are realizing that to maximize their success they need to attract and engage the best talent not just into internal talent pools, but external ones as well.
The ACM Group 2012 conference published the Call for Papers: check out the website for info on submissions and deadlines.
A strong emphasis of GROUP conferences is to foster a discourse on collaborative technology that bridges the fields of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Information Systems (IS). Relevant issues include the design, implementation, deployment, evaluation, and impact of these systems as well as examinations of relevant research methodologies.
As one of the technology industry's biggest spenders on research and development it was no surprise to find IBM showing off a range of projects that staff in its Centre for Social Business are busy working on behind the scenes. The project that most caught V3's eye was its Gamification Engine for the Enterprise product that looks to offer organisations a way to provide staff with a more engaging way to share knowledge or learn new skills.

Tesco becomes a social business by linking its product assortment to Foodie.fm a recommendation server which learns from users' eating and purchasing habits and suggests recipes and groceries that match their taste profile.
Foodie.fm, available as free app on iPhone, Android and Nokia applications, as well as via the Web and Facebook, enables users to make friends with other food lovers and to swap cooking tips and recipes. Visitors can create an editable shopping list, based around a meal, by clicking on photos of recipes. For example, if a user was to click on the recipe for beef burgers, the shopping list would consist of mince meat, onions, salt, etc.
