NEW DATES: Abstract Submission deadline: May 31, 2012 Paper Submission deadline: June 4, 2012
The International Workshop on Socially Intelligent Computing (SINCOM) provides a forum on the study, design, development and evaluation of the emergent intelligence that human-computer systems demonstrate. Socially intelligent computational systems bring together people and computers, support the creation of radically new forms of collaboration, communication and intelligence and allow the generation of new, emergent behaviors.
Prof. Takis Metaxas discusses the need for Research Replication in Social Computing:
A call for replicating Social Computing results as a necessary step in the maturity of the field.
The field of Social Computing is a rather new one but it is one of the more active in Computer Science in the last few years. Many new conferences have been created to host the research efforts of computer scientists, social scientists, physicists, statisticians and many other researchers and practitioners. The excitement generated by the opportunities that opened through the relatively ease of retrieving large amounts of data has led many young researchers in diving to uncover the modes of social interactions.
"There's an immense amount of value in data about people," says Bernardo Huberman, senior fellow at HP Labs. "That data is being collected all the time. Anytime you turn on your computer, anytime you buy something."
Huberman, who directs HP Labs' Social Computing Research Group, has come up with an alternative—a marketplace for personal information—that would give individuals control of and compensation for the private tidbits they share, rather than putting it all in the hands of companies.
In a paper posted online last week, Huberman and coauthor Christina Aperjis propose something akin to a New York Stock Exchange for personal data. A trusted market operator could take a small cut of each transaction and help arrive at a realistic price for a sale.
Dion Hinchcliffe's view on the value of Social Business and the ROI Question:
It’s a pretty simple equation at the end of the day. When businesses decide to invest in technology, they are hoping to ultimately get more value back than they put in. The time windows for such investment are generally 2 years, more or less. This was recently validated for me as I helped judge the entries for the 2012 CIO 100 Awards. I was surprised that many companies expect 100% ROI in rather short periods of time, often in just sixth month for efforts that may have taken years to implement. Whether this is generally unrealistic or actually achievable is besides the point.

The world is changing and needs Social Business Architects. Gone is the epoch of the passive consumer, now customers want a say.
At the same time, the quest for survival and growth is causing companies to stop looking at suppliers as someone to squeeze on price and instead as partners in innovation. And, employers are realizing that to maximize their success they need to attract and engage the best talent not just into internal talent pools, but external ones as well.
The ACM Group 2012 conference published the Call for Papers: check out the website for info on submissions and deadlines.
A strong emphasis of GROUP conferences is to foster a discourse on collaborative technology that bridges the fields of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Information Systems (IS). Relevant issues include the design, implementation, deployment, evaluation, and impact of these systems as well as examinations of relevant research methodologies.
As one of the technology industry's biggest spenders on research and development it was no surprise to find IBM showing off a range of projects that staff in its Centre for Social Business are busy working on behind the scenes. The project that most caught V3's eye was its Gamification Engine for the Enterprise product that looks to offer organisations a way to provide staff with a more engaging way to share knowledge or learn new skills.

The papers accepted for presentation to the CI 2012 conference have been announced. Coupled to the list of invited speakers, this seems a "not-to-be-missed" event.
A paper by researchers from University of California at Riverside and Yahoo! Research Barcelona presented at the ACM International Conference on Web Search and Data Mining (WSDM) 2012 examined the correlation of micro-blogging activity with stock-market events.
The paper shows that even relatively small correlations between price and micro-blogging features can be exploited to drive a stock trading strategy that outperforms baseline strategies.
