It may surprise no one that Halloween is one of the biggest shopping holidays of the year. What may seem surprising at first is where people are getting ideas for Halloween costumes and decorations.

So entertainment giant AEG, part-owner of basketball team LA Lakers, and owner of event stadiums across the US and Europe (including the Rose Garden, o2), is rolling out AXS.com (twitter feed), a ticketing service designed to rival Ticketmaster. This is the latest post from Social Commerce Today, a site that I serve as associate editor. It's written by Dr. Paul Marsden.

It’s easy to include Facebook in your marketing plan. The hard part is making it work for your business. Not that I need any incentive to visit fast food restaurants, but these five certainly provide it via their smart use of Facebook.

Peanuts' character Lucy was an expert at bait and switch, and Charlie Brown fell for it every time. By forcing businesses to use Promoted Posts, Facebook may be playing a similar game of bait and switch.

"Marketing at Procter & Gamble requires social-media rapid-response and recovering from the occasional big mistake." Social media and the need to listen to customer conversations, then respond quickly has changed the face of marketing. To cite the article, not unlike political campaigns, rapid response is required.

Facebook's entry into social commerce with its new Gifts feature has been highly touted, but is just the tip of the social gifting iceberg.
The question is, will Facebook be content to stay just the tip?

"Vanity publishing has come to Facebook. As a user, if your content is not interesting enough to get commented on or liked, you can now pay an estimated $7 to get your post to appear."
Facebook is turning more into an advertising network and less into a social network. I guess it has to find ways to increase revenue in order to bump up the stock price and satisfy shareholders. However, could allegiance to shareholders mean that it caters less to its users? And, if so, could that be Facebook's Achille's Heel and the beginning of its downfall?
Most certainly it opens the door for non-advertising based social networks to gain entry. App.net is one that comes to mind.

"Is there a social media marketing paradox? A much reported study from Forrester seems to indicate that social media marketing is a bust for ecommerce."
That may be true for larger retailers, but not for the small guys. (Forrester didn't bother to include the latter group in its heavily biased report.) Smaller e-commerce merchants are seeing results, but to learn that you have to read another report, the one that comes from e-commerce platform provider Ecwid. (You can read my thoughts on the subject here.)

With all the blogging, sharing, news articles and conferences that tout and exploit the uses of social media, you'd think the idea of using it to drive e-commerce sales would be a no-brainer. Some good, though basic information on how to use social media to drive social sales. Key = get social networkers to your website.

For businesses trying to reach customers and potential customers online, Facebook, with its more than 1bn users, has become a platform that can't be ignored. In my opinion, Facebook has pulled a bait-and-switch on businesses by forcing them to spend money to promote posts. Is it worth it?

How many times have you seen a brand share an image of something that you'd like to buy?
Facebook is testing a new feature with a few select brands called Collections that allow users to not only like, but "collect," "want" or buy products shared by these brands via photos.
With "Gifts" Facebook took a stab at Amazon. Is this Facebook's way of now inserting itself onto Pinterest and The Fancy's turf?

Facebook has passed one billion active users, social network founder Mark Zuckerberg has confirmed, of which 600m are mobile users.
By now everyone knows that Facebook hit the one billion user mark, but what you may not know is its next big play (other than finding more ways to advertise and leverage user data that is). It's commerce integration: "I think there’s about to be a big push in commerce,” says Zuck.

Social media shopping sites are offering payments to shoppers who post product links that drive Web traffic and sales.
Getting paid from retailers by sharing links to products on social networks is either an ethical hot potato or smart affiliate-style marketing. At its worst, such practices could amount to little more than spam.
Read my blog post, which outlines my views in response to this practice: http://thesocialmediahandyman.com/2012/10/turns-out-brand-advocates-can-be-bought-but-is-it-ethical/
