Google's Secrets Of Innovation: Empowering Its Employees

Google's Secrets Of Innovation: Empowering Its Employees | Social Business & innovation | Scoop.it
Google, a great marketplace success, has fostered continuous innovation by smartly managing its employees. Laszlo Bock, Senior Vice President of Google's People Operations, talked to me on Thursday about Google’s innovation secrets.
Nikita GODARD's insight:

This article wich is  about the powerful management of Google is very relevant. It doesn't talk about any Social Business but it talks about Social interections allowing Google to develop its competitive advantages! (Ideas transformed in Innovations)

If you read “Transient advantage : Achieving a sustainable competitive edge is nearly impossible these days. A playbook for strategy in a highvelocity world” by Rita Günther McGrath (from Harvard Business Review, June 2013) then you can see there the operational application. Google through many applications (GUTS, TGIF, FixIts etc.) pushes its employees to think, develop and share ideas and issues. Google set up a great space for that, in accordance with the Nonaka's Knowledge Creation Framework composed of different processes, namely: socialization, externalization, combinaison, internalization.

Actually it is ideas factory (please see the picture of a 'Google Cafés').

Thus, Google takes advantages of a pipeline of transient competitive advantages (innovations) and it stays the leader.

With Wall Street’s Support, Jeff Bezos Can Conquer the World Without Earning a Profit | Social Business & innovation | Scoop.it
E-commerce was king this past holiday season, with Christmas surge orders overwhelming UPS’s systems and forcing $100 million in upgrades to prevent future fiascos. So it was no surprise on Jan. 30 when Amazon reported it had become even more enormous than ever before. According to its latest earnings report, the online shopping giant's...
Nikita GODARD's insight:

What do you know about the (social & digital) businesses of Amazon, Snapchat or Instagram ? More exactly, how is their profitability ?

Actually, these companies have developed a revolutionary and disruptive business model ! Their innovation is clearly there, earning money without making any (or few) turnover or margin. Among these 3 firms, maybe Amazon is different because it offers a platform and a connection between Supply & Demand (like Airbnb). About Snapchat and Instagram it is pretty different. We can obviously notice a huge advertising potential if the both companies would integrate advertising in their services. But they decided to make money differently...

5 Ways Big Data Can Cure Healthcare | SiliconANGLE | Social Business & innovation | Scoop.it

Big Data encompasses much of our lives, whether you are aware of it or not.  It’s there when you use social sites like Facebook and Twitter, the enterprise is using it to better understand the whims of consumers, and even in healthcare, Big Data now plays a vital role.

With the use of Big Data and analytics, xMatters , a communications platform responsible for alert management, created an infographic detailing how communication between patients and healthcare providers is crucial.

According to the infographic (below), over 85 percent of patients are comfortable with communicating with their physicians over email, and 81 percent believes that communication plays a huge role in determining whether a patient lives or dies.

Miscommunication can lead to medical errors, or worse, death. Sixty-five percent of 2,034 communications breakdown result in medical errors, while 70 percent end in death.  A physician’s failure to communicate has an 80 percent chance of resulting in malpractice.

If Big Data can be used to determine what’s wrong in the healthcare system, surely it can be used to fix it as well, right?

5 Ways Healthcare Can Be Better with Big Data...

- Crowdsourcing for a cure

 - Quality Databases

- More useful information

 - Apps for life

- Predictive analytics

Nikita GODARD's insight:

I found this article after having do some researches about Ginger app'.

What is it ? "Ginger.io's Android and iPhone apps use data from your phone to safely and securely watch for days when your health may take a hit. We then connect you with care providers who can step in when it matters most" (from their website).

In accordance to the topic of this Curation page, the article includes the both social dimensions: Social aspects related to Healthcare and Social Networks and connecting people (developing interactions and socialization). The all thing is oriented on a Business approach through the Big Data concept.

Simpa Networks offers clean energy through a prepaid payment platform
Nikita GODARD's insight:

A real case study of the application of the BoP approach in India.

What is the customer's need identified by "Simpa Networks" ?

"They launched Simpa Networks in late 2010 in the US and looked at markets where demand for their expertise existed. India was on top of the list, thanks to a population of over 1.2 billion out of which 400 million live without electricity."

Tipically, the Bottom of the Pyramid (by incomes) is targeted by offering to poors a micro-grid. A micro-grid is an intelligent electricity distribution network, operating at or below 11 KV, where the energy demand is effectively and intelligently managed.

Thus, these entrepreneurs took advantage of a gap in the electricity distribution business through Technology while solving a social issue.

Finally, their model is mainly based on a Micro-credit system to push customers to spend money.

Nikita GODARD's insight:

By betting on the future managers, companies will have managers having a more complete and more pragmatic vision of the business reality. So, all the actors find some benefit there. Let us not fool ourselves, it is also a way for the multinationals to program the future graduates.
We can quote the narrow idea of this article with the bestseller of Vineet Nayar " Employee first, Customer second " or still in the strategy of the ESC Pau: "Act business, think human".

Human should be the first investment for companies.

Design Thinking for Social Innovation (SSIR)

Design Thinking for Social Innovation (SSIR) | Social Business & innovation | Scoop.it
Designers have traditionally focused on enhancing the look and functionality of products. Recently, they have begun using design techniques to tackle more complex problems, such as finding ways to provide low-cost healthcare throughout the world.
Nikita GODARD's insight:

'Design Thinking' isn't a recent concept but it is more and more used for several last years for social and business applications. In fact, this article underlines mainly two issues:

On one hand we can quote the first issue: "The designers of the center, however, missed the opportunity to design an even better system because they failed to consider the culture and needs of all of the people living in the community." Indeed, very often project managers (or anyone) seem to be missing the big picture. That is why nowadays, marketers use more a 4Cs' approach (Customer / convenience / cost / communication) for the Marketing Mix oriented customers instead of 4Ps' approach (Product / price / place / promotion) oriented product onception. To think a project begin with customer's needs, it is obvious but not so easy !

Thus, the author spoke about 'Design Thinking" as being an approach "from designing consumer products to designing consumer experiences."

And on the other hand, this concept offers to companies a process for Innovation: a system of overlapping spaces composed of 3 spaces... Does it allow companies to produce better outcomes ?

Socially Responsible Investing: What You Need To Know

Socially Responsible Investing: What You Need To Know | Social Business & innovation | Scoop.it
Socially responsible investors are looking to promote concepts and ideals that they feel strongly about but also invest successfully.
Nikita GODARD's insight:

SRI are they green investments ? What do they represent on Stock markets ?

From "La Banque Postale" (French Bank): "The European market of the ISR reached 6 763 billion euros at the end of 2011 (against 5 000 billion € at the end of 2009) France being the first one of this market, with 1 884 billion € of the outstanding discounted bills managed according to an approach ISR."

Nevetheless, the main issue also related to CSR or other Grenn trends is that actually just few Investment companies apply well and honestly a green and social policy. According les Amis de la Terre (the Friends of the Earth) led in 2009 and published in 2010 a study intitled "Socially responsible investment: the hour of the sorting ".
The result has underlined among 89 analyzed funds , not less than 71 funds contain in their asset portfolios at least one of fifteen controversial companies selected by the Friends of the Earth for their disastrous social and environmental practices", underlines the NGO

Better ways of doing business: Creating Shared Value

Better ways of doing business: Creating Shared Value | Social Business & innovation | Scoop.it
Mark Kramer explains how CSV goes beyond sustainability by using business resources to drive social progress, profitably
Nikita GODARD's insight:

The notion of "shared value", an old but current notion (from Mark Kramer).

The author summarizes very well the new Business stakes: "Companies must learn how to redefine their business around unsolved customer problems and improve lives while strengthening their competitive context. They need to see the customer groups they have been missing."

Nevertheless, I do not agree with definitions within the picture differenciating CSR (Corporate social responsability) and CSV (creating shared value). I do not think CSR is "philanthropy" or "separated from profit maximization". I have worked for my Research thesis on the integration of the Sustainable Development in the management control (Controlling) in a perspective of improvement of the performance". My point is CSR is an application of the sustainable development within firms. For me, it is a way for companies to improve their global performance for short-middle-long terms.
