Many organizations are just beginning to look at social technologies. Confusing enterprise social networks with the personal networking tools popularized by Facebook and Twitter, many organizations focus on broadcasting messages outward to internal users and customers. In this case, imitation is not the best tactic to realize value.

 

 Typically, the next phase is recognition of internal resources, and collaboration. Although employees understand how to use these tools for personal communication, there tends to be confusion about how to move past the military-inspired, hierarchical command and control structure of the past to build an entrepreneurial, knowledge sharing culture.

 

 A concerted effort must be made to move from isolated silos - project-based use of social toward broadening the scope of the collaborative mindset, empowered by technology. There is a cultural shift illustrated by an increasing desire to participate, drawing even more of the employees into collaborative activities.

 

Over time, communications can expand into conversations as brands and employees learn to listen rather than broadcast, co-create rather than simply mass-produce. With understanding of the business and ecosystem employees empower themselves, take on more accountability to interact with customers as brand ambassadors.

 

Waiting for social to be normal feels safer but means you likely miss the potential leadership value. This is not an evolution (takes too long), not a revolution (we already have enough volatility) but a natural process of maturing over time with directed practice.
