The future of media measurement should be people-based | David Gosen

The future of media measurement should be people-based | David Gosen | Social and digital network | Scoop.it

When it comes to the development and distribution of content, the pace of innovation has been breathtaking. Today, people consume media on multiple platforms and devices and, with the rise of mobile technologies, they do it any time and in any place. So, how should this proliferating and diverse consumption be measured?

Some, such as Frédéric Filloux in his Monday Note post on 20 May, argue that a site-centric approach using server logs is required. At Nielsen, though, we believe this overlooks some of the essential aspects of media measurement in today's world.

Currently, each publisher can only measure its own data. They can understand volume but, while some collect extensive user data through registration, in many cases they know little about their visitors. That's why Nielsen measures people.

Online audiences don't just visit websites in a vacuum – they are real people with real lives and real families and they no longer consume media in a linear way. When Nielsen recruits people for a panel, we do so with their explicit permission, and that allows us to get to know them. We construct panels that statistically represent the census of the region, and this gives us (and our clients) unique context about consumer behaviour across a wide variety of devices – computers, yes, but also televisions, smartphones, tablets, and more.

In a nutshell, the unknown is the scariest.  Yet. If we do not prepare our young people for the unknown future of now knowing who is looking at our online activity, it could be scary for them. Parent's stay away because they do not understand it. For that reason, I fully agree with the analogy of comparing social media to drugs.

Day In Life Of Internet Is A Day In OUR Lives Too [Infographic]

Day In Life Of Internet Is A Day In OUR Lives Too [Infographic] | Social and digital network | Scoop.it

'There are close to two and-a-half billion people online around the world – this number has grown 566 percent since the year 2000 – and 70 percent of them use the internet every day. As you might imagine, with that kind of presence, which amounts to more than a third of the global population, quite a lot happens over the course of each 24 hours.

The Internet never sleeps.  Is it possible to even fathom the idea of any given moment without someone in the world being connected to the Internet for one reason or another?  It wasn’t that long ago that the Internet wasn’t even a thing, but anymore it’s something that we can’t do without.  ztake a look at “A Day in the Life of the Internet”...

Karen Dietz's curator insight, May 22, 2013 12:17 AM

This article is all about how to leverage your geographic location for business advantage.

That idea is not new, but I like how this article treats the topic. The author, Mark McNeilly, makes the point that everybody wants to know where your business is located. So why not really use that as a marketing angle?

He gives clear examples of how location can influence your customer's perception about you. He suggest avoiding postcard branding -- that's where you put a picture of the Eiffel Tower on your package but you don't live in Paris.

McNeilly next makes several points, with examples, about connecting your story to your geographic location. Like Chrysler's 'imported from Detroit' campaign and microbreweries that are gaining repution because of how they are leveraging their location.

Now the question remains in my mind -- in what ways can I connect living in San Diego, CA to my story curation, consutling, and coaching busines? Hmmmmm....I may have to go to the beach to ponder that one :)

As Goes Digital Europe, So Goes The World: 5 Trends in European Digital Consumption [Infographic] | Social and digital network | Scoop.it

A McKinsey iConsumer survey spotlights key trends in e-commerce, mobile, multichannel, social media, and big data. From McKinsey via Visual.ly. Tons of excellent infographics in one place.

Europe is higher up on the evolutionary Ecom ladder than USA. Perhaps due to high gasoline prices or not having as dispersed or developed a brick and mortar environment (would be hard to duplicate Walmart's distribution prowess when so many countries are involved) England's retail is already at 15% several points ahead of America.

This infographic is instructive about the future of the world, ecommerce, mobile commerce and social media.

Amaury Van Espen's curator insight, May 28, 2013 5:11 AM

For the record. I don't love Klout. I do feel it is important because of what it  can become in the future.  There are many many problems and most of them have not improved in the past 14 months.  Yet, it has not gone away.  I think it is important to look at the scoreboard, even if the man pushing this buttons is a little drunk sometimes.  If many people in the gym are looking at the scoreboard, it is silly to ignore it. With that said, it is also important to tel lthe scorekeeper when he is wrong.  I suggest to start an account, pay attention and monitor it.  Therefore, you will have more clout when contact Klout to contact improvements and solutions. It can be helpful. It does need help.

What do the scores on the scoreboard mean?

In the 70's? (You are in teh tip 1%)
