Osocio's insight:

Women, Action & The Media has launched a campaign to put pressure on both Facebook and its advertisers to control “gender-based hate speech” on its pages, the same way they say it does with other hate speech.

Deanna Moore's curator insight, September 26, 2013 9:42 PM

I've never really noticed this kind of advertising until now, that it terrible marketing from Facebooks aspect. Who would want an ad next to a page thats promoting rape, or pushing a women down the stairs to miscarry, or even a girl who has obviosuly been beaten? I mean thats unethical for a business to think "hey its business, i dont care as long as my add is promoted" It does matter, and for those who dont think it does should really take a good hard look at the big picture, the consumers will remember the things you have promoted or ad not problem sititng aside while tey were promoted. Facebook needs to learn to filter these things, they are horrifying and disgusting.

Artists use data to make political statements

Artists use data to make political statements | Social Advertising News | Scoop.it

Big data can feel impersonal, overwhelming and cold. But stark statistics are now being used to make intimate statements through art and public advocacy.

The past few years have seen the widespread availability of a large amount of data, thanks largely to the internet.

Census reports are easily searchable, campaign polling is expertly parsed and analysed, and online dating behaviour provides a glimpse into human sexuality.

Now more artists are using these impersonal details to make an impassioned statement; visit the article link for examples.

Plain packs for Australia smokers

Plain packs for Australia smokers | Social Advertising News | Scoop.it
Anti-smoking campaigners celebrate as Australia becomes the first country in the world to introduce plain packaging for cigarettes, the BBC's Duncan Kennedy reports.
Victor Stonex's curator insight, March 20, 2013 6:31 PM

The ones who are most effective in plain packaging are the British American Tobaccos company. With the new plain package law put into place, the company will no longer have its brand advertised on its cigarette cases, making the company unrecognizable for its business. Though the new plain packages may help people be aware of the dangers of smoking, others who intend to continue will still leave profit in company.

Olivia Gibb's comment, March 20, 2013 7:10 PM
Plain packaging on ciggarette packets in Australia is a great way for the Australian government to try and control the tobacco industry. From a marketing perspective however the marketers of products are now going to find this extremly hard to be able to differentiate there brand from others making the marketing of their product limited.
Sarah Daniel's comment, March 20, 2013 7:37 PM
This new law makes it incredibly hard for cigarette companies to build up brand image and loyalty. Aside from the ingredients and their rand name (which is written in standard print) there is nothing that distinguishes one brand from another.
