The world's first ghetto, 500 years later

The world's first ghetto, 500 years later | Soceity & Culture | Scoop.it
The word "ghetto" is derived from a community in Venice, Italy, where Jewish people were forced to live five centuries ago.

In preparation for the 500th anniversary of Italy's Venetian Ghetto, Ziyah Gafic scoured the 7-acre-wide part of the Cannaregio district where, for centuries, Jews were forced to live.  But all he found was an overwhelming silence -- an element that became central to the photographs he made there.

No additional insight to add. except  ... Wondering that if such a community had never been established perhaps the world "ghetto" would not be in our vocabulary.

This is too new for me to speculate as to the effectiveness or support that this new alliance will have.  What are the national, regional, and global motives of each of these 34 states?  I think we will all keep an eye on this moving forward  (Articles from CS Monitor, CNN and Al Jazeera).  Not everyone is convinced that this is anything more than public relations.

The Top Language Spoken Globally in 2050 Will Be... | Soceity & Culture | Scoop.it

"French is currently ranked sixth among world languages, after Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, Hindi and Arabic. But it is gaining speakers quickly and, the study reports, will be spoken by 750 million in 2050, up from 220 million today. A demographic boom in French-speaking African states could bump the percentage of global French speakers from 3 percent to 8 percent by 2050, but some skeptics think the predictions are overrated."

Treathyl Fox's insight:

"A boom in these African states could bump the percentage of global French speakers from 3 percent to 8 percent by 2050."  You don't say?  So glad to know the French language might get in the driver's seat for most spoken world language. Love the language.  Resided in Maryland USA from 1988 to 1995 and there was a school there that taught the children in French. At the time it seemed odd. But guess the educators were thinking ahead! Score!

Seth Dixon's curator insight, September 25, 2015 8:08 AM

I can't verify the projections in the article, but the thought exercise is a great exploration into future global geographies. As some populations are shrinking, others and still growing very quickly and it is clear that the future has the distinct possibility that the linguistic composition of the world might be very different from today.

Questions to Ponder: Considering current trends, what do you think the world will be like in the future?  What will be better?  What will be worse?

Fast track?  Not being impatient, but can y'all move any quicker in allowing sisters on the planet to just live?  When you look at the things they're asking for, it's just stuff that's a part of average day-to-day living!    We got Native American women who have to go to Congress to get protection from domestic violence.  We got Indian women suffering from gang rape violence.  We got women all over the world who might as well say they got no reason to live!!!   It's not like women are making unreasonable demands!!

Quick video, less than 2 minutes; but it's loaded with practical advice most people would have thought of on their own IF they saw the need.  New books touching on diversity topics are awesome. But we don't really have to write new books. There are books already written by authors all around the world, that reflect their culture, way of life, history, customs and traditions. Just find them and put them on the library shelves or sell them in our bookstores. OK. We may have to translate some of them. We can do that!! :)

It's OK. To explain how they work but my question was "Why Do We Need Them?" Why do we need anybody to LEAD us? We can decide our own fate, can't we? We know which direction we want to take with our lives don't we?

Truthfully if two people stood in front of you and one said: “Bow! You are in the presence of your ruler!” - then the other one said: “It is my honor to serve and protect you.” Which one would you take an immediate liking to??
