Heathwood Press » Hierarchy or Horizontalism? – Critics of Occupy

Heathwood Press » Hierarchy or Horizontalism? – Critics of Occupy | SOCAPLocal | Scoop.it

The cycle of struggle which opened in 2011 has had numerous critics. A frequent target has been Occupy’s commitment to ‘horizontalism’ and direct democracy. Voices from the traditional left and from present-day critical theory declare that horizontalism is (at best) limited in its application or (at worst) incoherent. Our essay indicates a line of thought which allows such voices to be stilled.

Bitcoin Isn't the Way of the Future - JDJournal.com

Bitcoin Isn't the Way of the Future - JDJournal.com | SOCAPLocal | Scoop.it

Bitcoin’s success has the potential to disrupt a lot of ideas about money. According to Stephen Mihm, “Anyone who thinks that Bitcoin will triumph has to believe that it will succeed where earlier generations of private currencies failed — that Bitcoin will, improbably, manage to overthrow more than century’s worth of accumulated state power, jealously guarded and ruthlessly enforced. That’s a preposterous fantasy — and a dangerous one, if you’re an investor. Indeed, people who believe that governments of the world will let a stateless cryptocurrency usurp their hard-won monetary prerogatives aren’t forecasting the future. They’re living in the past,” the University of Georgia professor wrote in an article on Bloomberg News.

Peercoin - a cryptocurrency with built-in price stability and an energy efficient mining mechanism

Peercoin - a cryptocurrency with built-in price stability and an energy efficient mining mechanism | SOCAPLocal | Scoop.it

Peercoin is a cryptocurrency inspired by Bitcoin and built on the same concept, but with some important differences.

Peercoin has introduced a less calculation intensive concept called “proof of stake” which is more economical with computing power.

Peercoin’s programmers have found a way to counteract the deflationary spiral that is characteristic of Bitcoin.

The currency is programmed to have a yearly inflation rate of 1% – quite in line with and actually better than most of the fiat currencies we are using today.

Some news from the fast developing cryptocurrency eco system. While Bitcoin is mainly an investment vehicle, this one called Peercoin might actually become very useful in the area of payments ... buying and selling things and paying for them.

A question that was asked in a comment:
"what about the energy that it requires to mine? Is it being addressed?"

The answer:

"Yes Ferananda, the energy for mining question is being addressed.

There are two mining mechanisms, the original energy intensive mining like we know it from Bitcoin. It's called proof of work and requires brute calculation power.

The second mechanism is called "proof of stake" and it is accessible to those who have been holding Peercoin for some time. Everyone has what's called a coin age, which is the sum of the number of coins by the number of days they have been sitting on the person's account. The second mining option forfeits your stash of coin age (puts it back to zero) but it allows for one shot of easy-go easy to do mining. The design is that this second way of mining will gradually replace the brute force "proof of work" making the whole process much more energy efficient."

“The issue and question for me though is: Is the current system reformable? It appears not to be or at least in relation to the dominant parts. Therefore the arguments for ecological reconstruction that Gar Alperovitz has been advancing seems to me to be the viable and practical way forward. Critical to any solution is a model for change that enables monopoly and enclosure to be overcome and to do so steadily and inexcorably without descending into civil war.

With the collaborative economy pushing businesses into the next phase of social business, executives must learn how to motivate, encourage and lead employees [and customers too] in a way that adds value to everyone involved in the collaborative work environment. Employees and customers are collaborating on products, services and content more than ever before. In preparation for the collaborative economy, consider what role do executives play in fostering a collaborative environment when employees and customers can receive what they need from each other?

Top Bitcoin exchange explains virtual currency in simple web tutorial

Top Bitcoin exchange explains virtual currency in simple web tutorial | SOCAPLocal | Scoop.it

Leading Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox has released a new website that provides a simple explanation of what Bitcoin actually is. The site, Bitcoins.com, is essentially a tutorial on the virtual currency, a single unit of which last week reached the price of $1,000 for the first time ever last week. Mt. Gox's site walks users through the basics — what Bitcoin is, why people use it, and how it works — before leading into a step-by-step guide on how to get started. It's certainly not a comprehensive rundown, but the site could prove useful for the uninitiated or those who struggle to understand the Bitcoin concept.

Giving more in a sharing economy

Giving more in a sharing economy | SOCAPLocal | Scoop.it

People’s surplus time is something we can make much more of, particularly with regard to the needs of older people who are isolated or who feel vulnerable. To capitalise on this resource we have to tackle those obstacles that reduce people’s propensity to offer their surplus time. The solutions may be many but include technologies that allow people to identify where their surplus time, however marginal, can be used to good effect, achieving a better connectedness between formal care, informal family care and other community support, enabling organisations and groups to increase mutual support within existing structures, changing the perception of what older people have to offer, and supporting people to create their own systems of informal support. For each of these proposals there is a practical agenda. Finally, and perhaps most difficult to attach practical actions, we need a different ‘meme’ for supporting people that helps people to understand it as an everyday action for everyone.
