With the release of Google algorithm updates such as Panda and Penguin, writing quality content has never been so important. Keyword Research is one of the main techniques you can use to ensure there is a high enough volume of searches for what you are writing about and that competition levels are acceptably low for these keywords. "Why is About.com struggling? Though there are likely many factors, one of the key ones being discussed is that Google, through updates like its Panda update last year, have sought to de-prioritize content farm sites, like About.com, in favor of site it feels are higher quality."

Google has unveiled its latest search innovation – adding Gmail messages into search results. This is a trial which will let users see relevant content from personal messages in right-hand column of search page.
"Google Panda and Penguin have changed web marketing and SEO strategies dramatically. Companies that shift from technical search tactics to building content marketing machines will survive the changes and excel in the new content-centric era." "Brands must become publishers! It is a mantra that is heard often, but increasingly it is becoming a reality for marketers. As the search engines continue to evolve their algorithms, the technical SEO tactics of yesterday no longer hold. Instead web marketers must evolve into becoming sophisticated publishing operations. The story of Discover Africa, a travel agency based in South Africa, showcases just how quickly and dramatically web marketers need to change to keep pace in the changing search environment."

"In March of this year, Google Analytics released a set of new reports for measuring the effectiveness of traffic from social networks. It was a great addition and provides some valuable information about how social is affecting your business. For example, you can view social referrers, content that received traffic from social networks, view conversations across certain social networks, view conversion data (including last click and assisted attribution), how social visitors flow through your site, and more."

"For those of you who were at this year's MozCon, this post is the punch line to my presentation (download it here). If you did not attend, here’s what happened: I spoke for about an hour about Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn targeting. I worked to explain that research using paid social ad creation tools (including FB Ads) matters to organic social (community management) - the same way that the AdWords keyword research tool matters to organic search (SEO). After my talk, something like 800 people in the audience sort of looked up as if to say, “WTF is Marty talking about!?” Thankfully, Rand came out at the end and asked some smart questions that helped clarify. Then, we had a fireside chat."

"You want to create content that is relevant and interesting. Once all that hard work starts to show improved results, don’t let others take all the credit for traffic uplifts across non-brand terms and ranking improvements for target keywords." ... "The key to this is not to try and create extra content for no good reason. The goal is to make sure that you’re creating opportunities for engagement from your target market, and ensuring your brand’s voice is out there being heard."

"The rules of search have changed. In fact, they change on a daily basis. But never so dramatically has rank been uprooted since the explosion of social media. Social media sites, especially the power houses of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, have become backlink central for affecting organic search results. Social media’s influence on driving business via the web is expected to surpass search engine optimization (SEO) in 2013, according to eMarketer. Web marketers and PR professionals must pay attention to how social media affects search, and ultimately how it can change the rules of online visibility and (online) brand engagement."
