Many of the findings were predictable but powerful, backing up theorists’ beliefs that CEO personality, corporate culture, and firm behavior are strongly linked. For example, CEOs who displayed more openness—meaning they were curious, accepting of new ideas, and eager to think outside the box—engendered a corporate culture of being more adaptable to fast-moving events, willing to take risks, and inclined to experiment with the status quo...

12 Signs Of Un-Leadership

12 Signs Of Un-Leadership | Smarter Business | Scoop.it
Top 12 Signs Of Un-Leadership

So I thought we’d have some fun with the idea. Here are my top 12 signs of un-leadership or demotivators. See if you agree or disagree or maybe you can add some of your own.

Make yourself the purpose of everything the organization does.
Withhold information and then criticize others for not being as smart as you.
Compensate yourself (or a small, inner circle) exponentially better than the team.
Reward suck-ups and brown-nosers.
Answer questions someone asks of your team members.
Interrupt people. Finish their sentences
Insist on being right. Never admit fault, or always have an excuse.
Show team members where they fall short. It’s only for their good…
Remind them how you helped them by showing them where they fell short.
Change direction or priorities regularly.
Shoot messengers.
Ask people to do something but, before they can do it, do it yourself because they weren’t moving fast enough..

Forget The Pitch: To Answer “What Do You Do?” Share A 30-Second Story | Smarter Business | Scoop.it
Learn how to create and tell simple sales stories to effectively communicate your value proposition when potential prospects ask "What do you do?"

Karen Dietz's curator insight, April 13, 11:40 AM

One of my former clients, Andy Paul @ZeroTimeSelling  of Zero Time Selling, writes this post that is right on.

When someone asks you, "What do you do?" -- forget the elevator speech!! Yes, that's right. Just drop it. Share a 30-40 second client story instead. You will get way better results.

What kinds of results? Memorability. The listener will know the difference you make and the value  you bring. You will have begun a relationship, turning a prospect into a warmer lead. These are all things we want.

Andy's post tells you exactly how to create a 30-40 second story. I've used this technique for years and it really works!

The only suggestion I would add is to make sure your customer story makes your customer the hero -- not your. Show the listener how the client was able to do something extraordinary. Everyone wants to be the hero. You are the secondary character.

Go read this post and try it out this week. You'll be glad you did!

Four Ways to Up the Ante in Your Marketing Strategy - B&T

Four Ways to Up the Ante in Your Marketing Strategy - B&T | Smarter Business | Scoop.it

Michael Burgess, President of HBC Digital, Hudson’s Bay, who operates retail stores throughout the US and Canada including Saks Fifth Avenue,  comments that “the majority of consumers are crossing channels and using multiple devices, whether they start by opening something on mobile and then concluding the purchase either on a tablet, desktop or in the store, or just researching online and transacting in the store”.

The total impact of digital is having a hefty and growing impact on business revenue. A recent PwC report indicates that the majority of respondents surveyed purchased online via PC at least every month and 24% of respondents purchase online via mobile monthly. This doesn’t take into account the research consumers do online before transacting in a brick-and-mortar location, but attribution is another story we’ll touch on later in this article....

7 Lessons Everyone Can Learn About Leadership From Game Of Thrones

7 Lessons Everyone Can Learn About Leadership From Game Of Thrones | Smarter Business | Scoop.it

Game of Thrones is set in a medieval world of knights, dragons, and magic, characterized by long, cold seasons, and populated with White Walkers. This most amazing and compelling TV series has captured the hearts and minds of people around the world. In the history of mankind, never has a TV series been so downloaded and watched, so are there leadership lessons we can take from this series?

Before I answer this question, I will tell you a story; I run a training company, after all. A man in a hot-air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced the altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.”

C’mon, respect the ONE thing your audience cares about! | Smarter Business | Scoop.it

Numerous studies tell us that we should create long form content because it tends to rank better in search ,. Minimum 1000 words. Then it became minimum 1500. Now I regularly read “minimum 2000–2500 words.”But that’s precisely the problem of modern marketing… Time is the most precious thing anyone has.By looking at data we (marketers) often seem to make the same mistakes all over again. We throw more stuff at our audience and potential clients as we chase what’s measurable more than what’s not. More visitors who spend more time and view more pages. More long form content to rank better. More likes, more retweets. “Engagement” is the holy grail.Let’s stop the bullshit and acknowledge that often our audience doesn’t want to spend more time than they have to....

Intriguing article on how "brick-and-mortar" retail outlets are adapting to cloud-based shopping trends and mobile payment systems.  Here are five of the major types of stores that will evolve to meet customer needs:

Experience - Rich stores such as Home Depot.

Urban or express stores such as some new Target Express outlets.

Shopper specific stores such as Macy's

Pop-up shops using cloud-based marketing solutins and mobile payment systems.

Omnichannel retailers such as Walmart and Crate and Barrel which offer a variety of delivery options for customers.

Biz storytelling colleague Michael Margolis gives us the hard-core formula that creates the business case for storytelling.

Wow -- have we come a long way! It's been years since I've been asked if I tell stories to kids in the library on Saturday afternoon once I share with them I work in business storytelling. Thank heavens the times have changed.

Yet as Michael points out, too many companies validate storytelling as a business activity by asking "What other companies are doing it?" He instead responds by putting storytelling on much more solid footing in a way that would be hard for any executive to say "no" to.

Michael has put the business case together for storytelling in a very elegant way. Grab his wisdom, present the case for storytelling following his formula, and story on!
