The Prosperity Paradox

The Prosperity Paradox | #smartcities | Scoop.it

The challenges that cities are facing today are many and complex in both scale and span, and that makes it difficult to decide what to do next, what path to follow: What worries you the most? What keeps you up at night? These were some of the questions given to the high level panelists at the WCS Keynote Plenary with the overlaying theme "Trends and Opportunities - Urbanisation Forces in the Next 20 years".

Geoffrey West: The surprising math of cities and corporations

Physicist Geoffrey West has found that simple, mathematical laws govern the properties of cities -- that wealth, crime rate, walking speed and many other aspects of a city can be deduced from a single number: the city's population. In this mind-bending talk from TEDGlobal he shows how it works and how similar laws hold for organisms and corporations.

Physicist Geoffrey West believes that complex systems from organisms to cities are in many ways governed by simple laws -- laws that can be discovered and analyzed.

Sustainable cities: considering the city of tomorrow as an ecosystem

Sustainable cities: considering the city of tomorrow as an ecosystem | #smartcities | Scoop.it

"More than 3.5 billion people now live in cities and this figure is continually increasing. When the UN put the subject of sustainable cities on the Rio+20 agenda it confirmed the fundamental importance of redefining the city, given that rapid urbanization is placing great pressure on water resources, their treatment, the environment, biodiversity and public health. The city must not be designed as a goal in itself, but as an ecosystem in which sustainable resource management – whether of water or energy – is a fundamental priority."

How “Small Change” Leads to Big Change: Social Capital and Healthy Places

How “Small Change” Leads to Big Change: Social Capital and Healthy Places | #smartcities | Scoop.it

According to Dr. Richard Jackson, a pioneering public health advocate and former CDC official now serving as the Chair of Environmental Health Sciences at UCLA, the idea that buildings, streets, and public spaces play a key role in the serious public health issues that we face in the US “has undergone a profound sea change in the past few years. It’s gone from sort of a marginal, nutty thing to becoming something that’s common sense for a lot of people.”

Chicago among six cities named models for dedicated bike lanes

Chicago among six cities named models for dedicated bike lanes | #smartcities | Scoop.it
Chicago is one of six cities chosen as a nationwide model for creating protected bike lanes.

It’s called the Green Lane Project, a two-year study that will support and keep tabs on the progress of Chicago and five other cities — Austin, Memphis, Portland, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. — and their efforts in creating “green lanes,” or protected bike lanes.

“This project is going to be more about challenging cities to do more, benchmarking what’s going on in each city,” said Gabe Klein, commissioner for the city’s Department of Transportation said. “It’s sort of a healthy competition but also good for (determining) what’s working and what’s not working.”

WikiCity – How Citizens can Improve their Cities | Mexico

WikiCity – How Citizens can Improve their Cities | Mexico | #smartcities | Scoop.it
When governments don’t build infrastructure, citizens usually complain but can’t do much about it. However, this model of participation is being rethought by citizens around the world.

In Mexico, the movement is called wikiciudad (wikicity), and it has the central idea that anyone can edit and modify cities. In the city of Guadalajara, a group of citizens painted bike lanes that the city government had planned but didn’t build. In Mexico City, another group has concentrated on infrastructure for pedestrians. They’ve painted sidewalks that didn’t previously exist and zebra crossings in dangerous intersections. Their actions have not only been acknowledged by local governments, but sometimes even improved on.

Who will pay for smart city development?

Are Smart Cities (and by that we always mean MESH Cities) too expensive for bottom-up development? The OVUM research group issued a smart cities report this month with good and bad news.  The good news is that while the buzz around intelligent, responsive cities continues to fascinate the media, the bad news is that major IT players are wondering who is going to pay for digitally-enhanced cities.
