What makes a city a city - and does it really matter anyway? | Smart City | Scoop.it
In this dizzying world of tech cities, garden cities and smart cities, perhaps it's time to redefine what it means to be a city at all (What makes a city a city - and does it really matter anyway?
Hendy Brainta's insight:

This article is arguing on the real meaning of 'city'. What does it takes to become a proper city. The author mentions that a proper city is actually a very crowded messy place due to high population even though it's full of technology. I am somehow agree with the argument that a smart city should not only be a tech-integrated place but also a place where people could sustain the future because the world will not be able to sustain the keep growing population in term of its resources. Therefore, one of the biggest challenges on smart cities is to think of ways on saving spaces probably by increase the number of smart urban houses or building for the future.

The authors of this article says that being a smart city means that sustainability has to be maintained. One way is simply by supporting local businesses. Keep the economy flow by creating job, opportunities and promoting local economic. This has a very true strong point that being smart is not only having an automation around the city or country, but keep the citizens live sufficiently is one important factor as well.

Hendy Brainta's insight:

An article on the security of citizens data. It is undeniable that citizens might need to submit their detail personal information for the course of smart city like what we have now, smart card that we use to tap to open an office door. All the system has to be real time, controlled and watched 24/7. However if the system was being hacked during a working hour, it will not only affect one single person but also to more population. Therefore online security threats have to be watched and solved or minimised as much as possible for future growth of the smart city. This is the current situation according to the article that has to follow up and like I have said previously, that has to be the early problems to solve for all governments.

Hendy Brainta's insight:

This article shows some of the ideas of smart city that countries like the US and South Africa proposed. One of them is called Handup by the San Francisco Government. It allows people to donate to the Handup and they will pass the help to the homeless to provide food, medicine and even house. This could be seen as a good idea however, the security needs might need to be noted since people could easily breach into the financial system or even people could simply act as a poor just to receive help.

Hendy Brainta's insight:

This article argues that applying technology to a city will not solve problems. Leaking of information will be unavoidable and citizens' personal information will be very easily hacked and misused. This is true that risk of applying technology to human life is unavoidable. Therefore it is important to have an early research and development to avoid this to happen because security issue should not be a reason to not develop a smart city.

Despite all the advantages that technology brings to our life where in this case is the smart city, there are threats that people should be ready to face.
