Safety, security telematics users to reach 30 crore by 2018

"While safety and security mandates in Europe (eCall, 2015), Russia (ERA GLONASS, 2013), and Brazil (Contran, 2013) are on their way, car OEMs continue to roll out safety telematics services globally across their portfolio," comments ABI Research VP and practice director Dominique Bonte. "Ford now also offers emergency calling in Europe as part of its SYNC launch and Mercedes recently extended the availability of its free eCall service on the COMAND Online multimedia system to nineteen countries in Europe. Clearly OEMs increasingly consider safety telematics as a commercial proposition and no longer await possible mandates which keep being postponed."

Closely linked to safety and security, insurance telematics or UBI, aims at both monitoring and improving driver behaviour via instantaneous feedback or frequent summary reports, hereby reducing accident risk. Recent announcements suggest increasing interest from the likes of carriers with Vodafone unveiling partnerships with Towers Watson and AIG Europe, and Telefonica with Generali.

[CEO Blog] Three takeaways from Mobile World Congress 2013

[CEO Blog] Three takeaways from Mobile World Congress 2013 | "smart car" | Scoop.it
Matthew Key on the main highlights from this yearly event

Mobile World Congress was another reminder of how the mobile industry is moving far beyond phone calls and pure connectivity. Machine-to-machine (M2M) is a good example of this. We are investing in smart meter technology to help consumers have greater visibility and control over their energy consumption. We are investing and innovating in e-health to dramatically improve patient care and reduce inefficiencies. And we are enabling the creation of smarter homes, cars and cities.

The overwhelming majority of telematics functions in cars have so far been limited to devices that can only receive information such as GPS. With the additional use of mobile phones, however, more and more devices are being used that are capable of both transmission and reception.

Millimeter waves, radar| Electronic Design

Millimeter waves, radar| Electronic Design | "smart car" | Scoop.it

Radar On A Chip

Semiconductor technology now routinely allows millimeter-wave circuits to be packaged into ICs. Today we have single-chip radar chips just looking for new applications. Millimeter-wave radars have been around for years in military service, but that technology has not been widely deployed in commercial or consumer applications because of its expense.

According to a recent study by the Highway Loss Data Institute, with the use of forward collision detection and automatic braking in Acura and Mercedes vehicles, insurance claims dropped by 14%. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) projected that such radar systems had the potential to reduce rear-end crashes by 15%. While more research is planned by the NHTSA, the government could mandate such systems in all cars in the near future.
