Big Bale Hotel, Switzerland

Just the energy from people and cooking, some 60-80 Watts (200-270 BTU), plus the sunlight is enough to keep the house warm

Tim and Hannah's Affordable DIY Self-Sustainable Micro Cabin House Tour

Tim and Hannah's Affordable DIY Self-Sustainable Micro Cabin House Tour | Small Houses and Sustainable Architecture | Scoop.it
Name: Tim Eddy and Hannah Fuller Location: Tahoe, California Size: 196 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years; Owned Hannah grew up in a home her parents built (her father is a boat builder), so it was only natural for her to follow in their footsteps. Tim, on the other hand, has never built anything but fires. With that in mind, Tim and Hannah started out with 20 acres of land and no blueprints, and built one of the most impressive houses I've ever seen in my life — not to mention it's fully off-the-grid.
Jenna Van Horn's insight:
Such a wonderful small house. You can see the love the put into it, and it is quite impressive to think that on 20 acres of land, they are happy in a house of only 196 square feet.

La Casa de Da'vid

La Casa de Da'vid | Small Houses and Sustainable Architecture | Scoop.it
The house is in Hellam, PA, USA built from clay, straw bales, bamboo, cork, stone and roundwood with a green roof of desert sedums.
Jenna Van Horn's insight:

The straw bale home has held a certain fascination for me over the years. That we can use such cheap, basic materials to create effective insulation and full size structural components is astounding in all of its potential. In this specific example I also love that there is a climate appropriate green roof and organic wall lines.

Jenna Van Horn's insight:

Beautiful cabin that not only encourages simple living, but reduces the dependancy that comes with living in a "traditional home". Entirely self contained, the owner spent around $2000 on building costs and has no morgage and he spent only $300 on an entire winter's propane bill.

A Beautiful Icelendic Green Roof

A Beautiful Icelendic Green Roof | Small Houses and Sustainable Architecture | Scoop.it
This is a beautiful stone, turf roofed fishing station in Iceland built in the 18th century.
Jenna Van Horn's insight:

Pulled from the article, “When one creates green roofs the houses themselves become part of the landscape."

Green roofing techniques can be used on small-scale buildings, such as the homes mentioned in this article, or on a lager scale to help combat carbon emissions and urban heat islands.
