Bottom line..."pick one thing and be great at it." At first this surely sounds like nothing but throw-off advice, merely an opening line at some hight priced seminar.

If you think about it for a while you'll find it is really quite profound. Most of us try to be good at many things and end up missing being great at anything.

When it comes to engaging with your customers the one thing most small businesses are not great at is storytelling and in fact most are not even good at it.

Create content that is great by using storytelling and you automatically best 90% of your competition.

Storytelling Lessons from Ron Howard

Storytelling Lessons from Ron Howard | Small Business On The Web | Scoop.it

"A big-time movie director just validated brand storytelling in an extraordinary way. Find out what content marketers can learn about brand storytelling from seven of Ron Howard's milestone projects...

Brand storytelling lesson: Add color to your stories (but don’t break with your roots).
Successful companies withstand the test of time by presenting a consistent brand image. Drastically changing the focus of your stories is like starting from scratch. Add color to existing storylines, but make sure they reflect the bigger narrative you’ve built for your brand (remember to stick to your mission statement)."

craig daniels's insight:

Storytelling is hot with small business right now but by story telling I'm not talking about gossip or water-cooler jabber. The storytelling I'm talking about is an integration of your business history with the stories of your clients.

Here's what I'm talking about. You've been in business for years and you've helped lots of your customers answer their questions and solve their problems using your expertise and dare I say your intuition.

A first step to getting your business storytelling up and out for the world to see it is to create a timeline of memorable events and happenings while you've been in business. Once the timeline is completed create some simple one paragraph outlines for the high-points and plot out a strategy with your designated writer.

Read over the article about Storytelling and Ron Howard for a more in-depth direction to take your business storytelling.
