Good Ideas Aren't Good Enough

Good Ideas Aren't Good Enough | Small Business On The Web | Scoop.it

"A Japanese app on Apple's App Store called "Don't Step the White Tile" was recently copied by another developer with an app called "Don't Tap the White Tile." Both are free, and are basically the same, yet the knock-off is doing better than the original."

craig daniels's insight:

Bottom line..."pick one thing and be great at it." At first this surely sounds like nothing but throw-off advice, merely an opening line at some hight priced seminar.

If you think about it for a while you'll find it is really quite profound. Most of us try to be good at many things and end up missing being great at anything.

When it comes to engaging with your customers the one thing most small businesses are not great at is storytelling and in fact most are not even good at it.

Create content that is great by using storytelling and you automatically best 90% of your competition.

Finding Greatness: Your Inner Weirdo Helps You Get Ahead

Finding Greatness: Your Inner Weirdo Helps You Get Ahead | Small Business On The Web | Scoop.it
Let that freak flag fly says an Ogilvy amp Mather exec and success is sure to follow.

"Don't let your people fall into a rut. Keep leading them along new paths, blazing new trails. Give them a sense of adventurous pioneering.""

craig daniels's insight:

The posts author John Manley calls on all of us to declare our minor. All of us have a part steeped in passion that we don't usually bring out when we are at work but, our passionate side or our weird side may be just what the innovation doctor ordered.

Our so called weirdness is rich with color, chock full of creative zeal and imbued with cutting edge uniqueness. Isn't it time to open the door and let our weirdness do some work in the light of day?

Take a ride on Manley's train of thought and read the the complete post.

Ideas are Everywhere, Getting Them Implemented Is Rare.

Ideas are Everywhere, Getting Them Implemented Is Rare. | Small Business On The Web | Scoop.it
“Ideas are a dime a dozen. People who implement them are priceless.” What a great quote by Mary Kay Ash, and so true!
craig daniels's insight:

Think about the title of this post, Ideas Are Everywhere. If you talk to 100 people most will tell you they've had at least one good idea that could have either help people or made a lot of money. The sad thing is that maybe only one of them ever took the first step to implement that idea.

Implementing a new idea is a huge commitment that takes more than just courage to step it forward it takes belief in your vision of that idea. If you have an idea you need to believe in that idea if it has any chance of success, you won't take that first step if you don't believe.

Amy Rees Anderson has penned a short engaging post about how the people who implement ideas are priceless, check it out.

Taking Small, Smart Steps Lead Successful People To Their Goals

Taking Small, Smart Steps Lead Successful People To Their Goals | Small Business On The Web | Scoop.it
The image of successful people betting everything on one roll of the dice is exciting. It is also wrong.

"The successful entrepreneur is the person who makes an idea happen, even if there are a lot of unexpected problems, and even if it’s not a very good idea in the first place.  "

craig daniels's insight:

In this post the author Paul B. Brown lays out 4 steps to move you forward toward your goals. Not only is this good advice for entrepreneurs it's also good advice for any small businesses digital strategy.

  1. Start With Desire

  2. Take a Smart Step As Quickly As Possible

  3. Reflect And Build On What You Have Learned

  4. Repeat

In many areas your Digital Competition is innovating and taking risks, if they have success others will follow their lead. What this means is you will end up following them as well.

Instead of following the leader over and over, innovate your own path that allows you to get off the follow the leader treadmill.

Opportunity Arising - Newsjacking To The Rescue

Opportunity Arising - Newsjacking To The Rescue | Small Business On The Web | Scoop.it
Newsjacking, a type of content marketing, places the emphasis on breaking news events rather than how-tos or technical information and rides the wave of existing demand to get well-earned backlinks and branded mentions.

"For example, a high profile fire in a historic building could be used by a construction company to highlight the importance of local code and inspections. A bank robbery could be used by a home security company to discuss the merits of a reliable security system. In both cases, working in a natural sentence that highlights the company’s position will not be difficult."

craig daniels's insight:

Who among us is not looking around corners for opportunities to increase our rankings and visibility in search results? I'd look under couches and in dust bins if I thought winning search opportunities were hanging out there.

Newsjacking is a bit like lifting up a couch looking for a marketing opportunity. Keeping our eyes on what's going on in our local and worldwide areas may expose the perfect opportunity to promote our product or service.

Newsjacking is not a new concept but with the speed of today's news we can now jump on an opportunity like never before and while connecting ourselves to a tragedy is not a great idea, there are plenty of other things going on that we can embed our products and services into.

If the new community center gets painted Orange and we have an OJ franchise than let's publicly congratulate them on their choice of color. After all, we know a good color when we see it.

Can Too Many Ideas Sink The Ship?

Can Too Many Ideas Sink The Ship? | Small Business On The Web | Scoop.it

"

Some investors hate it when you bring them more than one idea. In their minds, this equates to a lack of focus. They see a person with a lot of ideas as some type of mad scientist, and they assume he or she isn’t a good businessperson.

I’m not like this. (For one thing, I myself enjoy the curse/blessing of having a million ideas.) The question is, what do you do about your idea flow? Do you have a process for managing it?"

craig daniels's insight:

Think about it, if someone has too many good ideas, do things become counter productive? I think it's a great question everyone in and our out of business needs to be asking themselves.

And if you are like me and believe that there are never too many good ideas just ideas that are not managed well you'll want to look at a few things to make managing ideas easier.

1. Evernote

2. Bright Idea

3. Wridea

4. Idea Scale

5. Manage My Ideas

I use Evernote as my idea container and organizer, it syncs across all my devices so it's always there and updated. The others listed above are new to me but I do plan on checking them out as they all look to come at collecting and managing ideas a bit differently. Who knows one of them may be an idea collector gem.
