Will Barbie make a difference in a young girl's career path? Maybe. Maybe not. Regardless, it's nice to see Mattel introduce the new Entrepreneur Barbie. While I don't think it will directly make a child say, "when I grow up, I want to be an entrepreneur," it does provide girls with an opportunity to participate in imagining what it might be like to be an entrepreneur.
With that said, I played with Barbies growing up. I had the Golden Dream Barbie. I think she was a star. I never thought about becoming a star for real just because Barbie was one -- I play acted it through Barbie, but it was not my aspiration. Barbie was a means to act out a life I would never lead -- and didn't necessarily want to lead. Barbie was fun to dress and make clothes for and direct -- she represented a tool for creativity rather than a role model for my life. I hope that Entrepreneur Barbie doesn't make entrepreneurship seem unrealistic. Barbie and her unreachable body measurements, unblemished skin, and perfect hair are pretty much unattainable. I just want little girls to remember that Barbie's careers -- she's had more than 150 -- are not necessarily as unattainable as her physical appearance is.
