Xero strikes alliance deal with KPMG UK
ZDNet
New Zealand accounting software company Xero has bolstered its presence in the United Kingdom, striking a strategic alliance deal with business consulting heavyweight KPMG UK.
Sarah Lochead-macmillan's insight:

Does this now mean that XERO are starting to target much larger businesses and move away from the small business client? I understand their need to expand the client base dramatically, but I feel the main users are still SME based, many of which in the UK wont be able to afford a KPMG.

Venture Capital: A Business of Failing

Venture Capital: A Business of Failing | Small Business NZ | Scoop.it
Ten years ago, the cost of starting a startup was around $1 million. Entrepreneurs heavily depended on venture capitalists (VCs) for outside financing because the upfront costs were just too expensive...
Sarah Lochead-macmillan's insight:

However, if you look at the graph 18% have been conirmed as failed. But there 35% private or unknown may not have "failed" in the same way. What of those that served the purpose and finished naturally, is that a failure?

6-week course focuses on starting a small business
Jackson Clarion Ledger
Starting July 30, the training program will be held from 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the JCJC Ronald E. Whitehead Advanced Technology Center in Ellisville.
Sarah Lochead-macmillan's insight:

But will it make you buisness ready in the real world? Many courses can teach you what you should do but not how to apply this in the real world. So you need to develop a coach or mentor or trusted sounding board so you can feed from their experience and make quicker gains and fewer mistakes.

Invoice payment times which typically indicate the financial position of firms, have been falling across New Zealand. Photo / Thinkstock.
Sarah Lochead-macmillan's insight:

What is interesting here is that larger companies seem to be paying slower. Those businesses I know who trade with government or council entities are waiting an extraordinary long time to receive monies, well past 50 days. I think these statistics are somewhat skewed by the fact that a lot of smaller businesses can no longer get credit accounts and therefore have to pay on time. Don't forget, NZ runs on the wheels of the back yard business.

"begin with the endin Planning to get out of business - New Zealand Herald

Sarah Lochead-macmillan's insight:

"Begin with the end in mind" goes the quote. However, many small business owners are the be all and end all in their business. The business is dependent totally on the owners IP and it isn't transferable - how do you exit that in a sale? Can you? I believe you can but most owners dont knwo where to go to get the help they need to start.

Sarah Lochead-macmillan's insight:

Connecting with your target market customers is paramount, but dont leave it all to socail media.

You need to create real relationships and that means entering into some good old fashioned face to face business networking. This is where you can generate sales and referrals that can sustain your sales in the tough times.

You also gain sources of other resources that can add value to your clients and your business by understanding what the others in your networking group can deliver. It is also an oustanding place of support. (www.bni.co.nz and www.tng.org.nz)
