I recently conducted a survey of small business owners.  The lead question asked what their single biggest challenge is.

I recently conducted a survey of small business owners.  The lead question asked what their single biggest challenge is.


In more than 70% of the responses,  the owners felt marketing was the challenge vexing them the most.  That matches data from the Small Business Administration.  The SBA also found that as businesses grow, the number who list marketing as their biggest challenge only drops to around 56%.

 

They also found that 56% of companies invest less than 1-3% of their revenue on marketing, including infrastructure.  Interesting that one of the biggest problems is getting the least fiscal attention!

I wrote this article because I talk with coaches and consultants constantly, and I always ask what the biggest business challenge is for them.  Almost all of them instantly blurt “SALES!”  But, as we talk more, I find that being “in demand” is the real challenge.  They aren’t in demand and, therefore, sales IS a big problem.

Not only is it a downer, but then I have to spend more time or money on trying to market and sell.  That pulls me further away from delivering value and can cut into my free time, too.  

 

So, I’ve figured out a way to market that just flat-out works.  It needed to not only work, but be easy, cheap and predictable for me too!

If somebody offered to give you three dollars if you gave them one dollar, would you take it?  Nielsen conducted 800 studies over 7 years and found digital marketing has a return on investment averaging 300%.  A Forbes study suggests that most small business owners aren’t taking advantage of digital marketing.  Why not?  Fear, knowledge, time, etc. are all reasons while as a group, we small business owners are letting a huge opportunity pass us by.
