VendorFit's insight:

MSPs have been driving technological innovation for years, finding unique business opportunities during every evolution of the modern computer system.  Managed Service Providers can be used by businesses to comply with insurance regulations that requires secure offsite backup/recovery systems, and they typically represent less of an up-front investment than data centers or in-house solutions.  ProfitBricks estimates that the new model of cloud computing will require significant changes in up to 50% of all businesses, with MSPs leading the way in integration and provision of cloud services.

One of the most important tech trends of 2013 was the hyper-localization of different technology companies.  Uber proved that a company could take an extremely local service (taxi driving) and bring them to the mobile era.  Small and medium sized businesses need to think locally as well - and this is increasingly possible because of gradually decreasing enterprise software costs.  Some industries will struggle with this new paradigm, particularly industries like retail that are dependent on a broad supply chain and many different "layers" of control, but they will adapt by breaking into functional units.

VendorFit's insight:

Cloud computing makes enormous-scale projects possible, but it also allows small and medium sized businesses to take advantage of features that would have once been impossible to utilize.  For example, small businesses can use cloud computing to take all of their point-of-sale software onto a distributed network, allowing sales representatives to take orders with tablets, phones, and other devices without being tied to a cash register.

Another way that businesses need to harness technology no matter their scale is through a search engine strategy.  According to this article, more people have internet access now than a print newspaper, so the majority of advertising dollars are shifting onto the internet.

We loaded software by feeding stacks of diskettes into the PC. When CDROMs came onto the scene, ... The ability to scale, both up and down, is critical for many businesses.
VendorFit's insight:

The next step in the evolution of connectivity is the increased reliance on cloud computing to network millions of "non-computer" devices such as wearable technology, home automation sensors, and even traffic cameras to a centralized system.  The "internet of everything" will start with home networks, bringing consumer electronics together into a cooperative ecosystem where (for example) your refrigerator might communicate with your treadmill to ramp up your exercise program after a particularly large meal.  How much will this new comprehensive networking affect privacy?  Will consumers be willing to allow collection of data on their most basic actions/habits?

Enhancements to Push-to-Talk Technology Transform the Utilities Industry
Utility Products
It's becoming more difficult to use the word technology without putting mobile before it.
VendorFit's insight:

The utility industry is probably the most resistant to change in the entire world, reliant as they are on decades-old infrastructure and extremely expensive technology.  On the other hand, the push to talk revolution is changing the way that the utility industries handle communication with field workers.

Basically, push to talk technology allows always-on connections between dispatchers and field representatives, and it allows employees of the utilities to communicate without wasting any time.  PTT has the potential to dramatically reduce operational delays, and it can limit costs by creating a more productive field environment with less delay between instruction and action.
