How Millionaires Approach Social Media

How Millionaires Approach Social Media | SM | Scoop.it

I’ve interviewed over 50 business owners who have a million-dollar net worth or more. As a blogger and podcaster I am always so curious as to how they use social media in their businesses.

If I were to generalize, most of the millionaires I interview use social media, or at least have someone in their company use it. But they are very clear on what it can and cannot do for them.

Social media is just the newest marketing avenue, just like cold calling, direct mail or networking. Social media helps you find people who might need you, and provides a way to introduce yourself. It also helps others find and recommend you. The easy-to-share aspects of social media make it hard for a business to ignore.

Here are a few tips, straight from millionaires, themselves on how they handle their social media.

Get clear on what you want out of social media...

10 Steps to Creating a WordPress Blog

10 Steps to Creating a WordPress Blog | SM | Scoop.it

Hey there! My name’s Ryan and I am another new member to the SEER team. I’ve learned so much since starting at SEER but I thought for my first blog post I would cover something I have some background in, WordPress.

I am helping to set up SEER’s upcoming blog on SEO for college students and I thought I would share the checklist I go through every time I start a new site on WordPress. If anyone’s New Years resolution was to finally start blogging then hopefully this post will give you a few ideas and tips or possibly save you a headache down the road.

The great thing about WordPress is that it really does simplify every step of creating and running a site. I was in a meeting with SEER’s developer Chris Le and half the time I thought he was speaking a foreign language when talking about advanced site design. I know some coding basics but thanks to WordPress and the plug-ins and themes created around it I’ve built more than a dozen sites ranging from your basic blog all the way to e-commerce and password protected membership sites.

Twitter Makes Two Major Announcements

Twitter Makes Two Major Announcements | SM | Scoop.it

Twitter is the second biggest social network after Facebook. Its growth has accelerated after it was embedded in the new Apple mobile operating suystem (iOS5).

Despite its popularity, its user experience is not as inviting or as multimedia rich as Facebook and Google+.

Since the launch of Twitter over 5 years ago, users have moved on from a “text” web and are demanding more visual and multimedia centric content.

You only have to notice the fast trending popularity of “Infographics” to realize that the social web requires information presented efficiently and visually with high definition images and media...

How 5 Top Fashion Facebook Pages Market on Facebook | Jeffbullas's Blog

How 5 Top Fashion Facebook Pages Market on Facebook | Jeffbullas's Blog | SM | Scoop.it

Shopping is a form of entertainment for some and something to be more avoided than herpes for others.

Shopping brings some to tears, for the retail and fashion obsessed it is a joyous synergy and celebration of capitalism, consumerism and style.
Waiting for new designs to be launched at the favourite fashion store are waited upon by fashionistas with expectant excitement, like children waiting for Santa and his sleigh.

Sharing your shopping experiences was usually reserved to a chat over the phone with your girlfriends or while having a coffee or a quick liquid lunch.

Shopping has been social for a long time but now we have social networks that can enhance and accelerate that joy by being able to share in an instant with 200 friends at once on Facebook, rather having to wait for the weekend....

Your “How-To” Post Will Fail If You Don’t Use These Techniques

Your “How-To” Post Will Fail If You Don’t Use These Techniques | SM | Scoop.it

Gone are the days when you could write a simple “how-to” blog post and rank in the top search results. Why is that? Two very good reasons.

First, all of the general and highly-competitive posts like “how-to blog” or “how-to find a roommate” are already written.

The other reason is Google Panda. Remember Google’s update this past year that took down a lot of the content farms? That algorithm was designed to penalize short and shallow articles and reward high-quality content.

Now, I’ve got good news and bad news for you.

7 Tips To Maximize Shares of Your Facebook Posts

7 Tips To Maximize Shares of Your Facebook Posts | SM | Scoop.it

Facebook recently changed the way users interact with content on fan pages: any user, including non-fans, can now post on fan page walls and like/comment/share fan page content. In other words, a Facebook user does not have to first like your fan page before they can interact with your content. This is a good thing!

Since this change, the emphasis has shifted slightly from gaining more likes (fans) to increasing the number of shares on each piece of content. When you craft your fan page updates in a manner that naturally inspires fans and their friends and visitors to your page to share with their networks, you set in motion ripples of viral visibility. Basically, free additional exposure...

Gamification: Motivation and Engagement

Gamification: Motivation and Engagement | SM | Scoop.it

What’s Game Good For?

Before we can talk about applying game mechanics to anything, we need to understand what a game actually us. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a game as “a form or spell of play or sport, esp. a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill, strength or luck.”

That’s pretty hard to digest as a something you can say to a decision maker! However, if we break it down further we can start to get at some core ideas that should help. Play and sport are all activities or tasks. Played is not a strong word in the corporate world. It conjures images of nerds playing quake after hours on the corporate network. So instead, how about we use completed.

Rules Can Be Starting Points

Next, rules. We all have rules, but it is not something you hear people talking about in businesses. Instead, we could say parameters or guidelines. All projects have parameters or guidelines...

How to turn LinkedIn into a relationship filter

How to turn LinkedIn into a relationship filter | SM | Scoop.it

The following interview is with Dave Gowel, who has been recognized as a “LinkedIn Jedi” by Inc.com and the Boston Globe, is the CEO of RockTech, and author of The Power in a Link: Open Doors, Close Deals and Change the Way you do Business Using LinkedIn (Wiley, December 2011). Gowel co-founded RockTech with Mark Rockefeller to build software tools that help corporations increase productivity through quicker adoption of underutilized technologies. The interview has been edited for clarity.

A lot of people see LinkedIn as a recruiting or job hunting network. What are some of the other ways professionals can put LinkedIn to work, once they’ve landed that dream job?

I think one of the key ways to think about it is really a relationship filter, that when you put in all the relationships that you already have, it allows you to see the ones that you could have more easily, or get information about potential ones...

#SocialMedia Tools #Oprah Style Favorite Things: Prepare To Scream Like a Girl | SM | Scoop.it

Social Media is evolving every day, or maybe even every minute of every day. It seems that new platforms are popping up all the time, so much so that it can actually be a tad overwhelming to say the least. I find that I am constantly tweaking the platforms that I use and honestly it has been an ongoing process. However I am so excited to say that I have found an amazing cocktail of social media tools recently that has really been working wonderfully for me.

Traditional Social Media allows an amazing avenue to share content. I consider it the vehicle to drive the content and can be a powerful thing if used properly. These channels are used to drive content based on particular demographics and I use each channel differently. The cocktail that I have compiled of traditional social media and the following channels has created the ultimate rocking social media tool kit for me!...

The Top Ten Social Media Lessons of 2011

The Top Ten Social Media Lessons of 2011 | SM | Scoop.it

As the holiday season prepares to give way to the New Year’s Eve and the end of 2011, the annual influx of year-end lists is about to begin in earnest. Top photos, top news stories, top Kardashian marriages… the lists are on their way. Lest anyone say that social media is any different, here for your consideration, in no particular order, are my Top Social Media Lessons of 2011 – part one today, and part two tomorrow.

Lesson #1: There is a significant amount of social network fatigue.

Google+. Quora. Empire Avenue. Chime.in. Unthink. It seemed in 2011 like there was a new or “hot” social network every month – and watching the social media in-crowd rush to adopt was a sometimes comical diversion. There was certainly an element of “shiny object syndrome” at play in the social media world...

I agree Martin, however we are finding that each of the venues seem to gravitate to somewhat different Demographics and show different response to engagement. A business should spend time with testing and focus on the venues most productive.

11 Guaranteed Ways to Get Others to Retweet Your Content | SM | Scoop.it

After creating content -- whether it's a blog post, an ebook, a webinar, or a video -- it's important to promote that content through social media channels.

And when you do promote that content in social media, you cross your fingers that it generates a ton of shares, tweets, and interaction. For the sake of Twitter, if you follow a few simple best practices, more people are likely to retweet and spread the distribution of your content, giving it a much broader reach and a better opportunity to get found by a new audience of prospective customers beyond your direct followers. Marketers should know how to retweet the right way, but it's also critical for them to learn how to get others to retweet their content, too.

40+ Social Media Dashboard Tools for Tracking Stuff

40+ Social Media Dashboard Tools for Tracking Stuff | SM | Scoop.it

As part of my on-going work developing social media for business units, I’m often asked about what types of tools I used for tracking all that ‘social media stuff.’

Let me talk about how I go about creating a social media dashboard

The basic answer is that I don’t have one tool (I have dozens, if not hundreds.)

The real answer is that I am not tracking social media.
I am tracking key performance indicators (KPI)
I don’t care if it is a shipping problem or a viral YouTube video.
I simply want to know how I can track it, manage it, and maximize results.

With that said: when I think about creating a social media dashboard or using a platform to track results… I am looking at several unique business identifiers that define what tool I need for the job at hand...

In 2003, engineers at Google filed a patent that would rock the SEO world. Named Document Scoring Based on Document Content Update, the patent not only offered insight into the mind of the world’s largest search engine, but provided an accurate roadmap of the path Google would take for years to come.

Tips for Starting a New Facebook Fan Page

Tips for Starting a New Facebook Fan Page | SM | Scoop.it

One of the things many people struggle with in social media are identity issues, and I am no different. Up until yesterday, my main Facebook entities included my personal profile and my fan page for Kikolani. While I love both of these, I found some problems with sharing links to posts I’ve done elsewhere. Specifically…

- Links I’ve posted to my personal profile lately haven’t gotten that much attention compared to plain status updates or photos.
- The fan page for this blog is focused on posts from this blog only. Fans didn’t sign up for posts from elsewhere.

So the solution was creating a new Facebook page. This page is specifically focused on my freelance writing and blogging as a whole so it can be a platform where I can share links to anything I have written anywhere...

How to Create a Jaw Dropping Social Media Strategy in 5 Steps | SM | Scoop.it

Social media is not a campaign… it’s a channel. It’s a means to an end, not an end in itself. That means your social media networks should be part of a larger marketing plan.

With that being said, you still need a set of goals to guide your individual social media efforts. Like most marketing plans, social media channels need to go through the following five goals in order to produce the kind of results that are truly profitable.

Step #1: Identify warm prospects

Step #2: Establish a conversation with your prospect

Step #3: Gain rapport with your prospect

Step #4: Develop a social media relationship

Just because you are talking to people doesn’t mean you have
