Plan on a #SocialMediaFail | Social Media Explorer

Plan on a #SocialMediaFail | Social Media Explorer | SM | Scoop.it

Nowhere do the mistakes, poor practices and questionable judgement of individuals, organizations and brands get exposed with such glee as they do in the sphere of the social web. It’s no wonder some CEOs or senior decision-makers entrusted with the stewardship of brands break out in a cold sweat at the simple mention of the words “social media.”

Mark Schaefer wrote a great post about Negativity Bias as it relates to the social web and how this phenomenon has created a playing field rife with PR land mines for anyone active in the space. Schaefer sparks dialogue at the end of his post by posing the following question:

“In a world where Negativeity Bias is gasoline on a viral fire, and one misstep can overwhelm years of positive work cultivating raving fans, why would anybody take a risk on the social web?”

97 Ideas for Building a Valuable Platform

97 Ideas for Building a Valuable Platform | SM | Scoop.it

The social media world changes daily. We are bombarded on all sides with interesting information, useful as also totally unnecessary. For this reason, I think the words of Chris Brogan are true, he say, things will change in 2012. For this reason we should be heading in the right direction and in the right dynamics if we wants to be successful on social media in the future. [note mg]

2012 is the year where social media oversaturation hits hard. We will scale back on our participation in social networks, and we will most certainly scale back who we choose to follow as sources. This won’t be because someone is bad or good. It will be based on whether the connection with that person adds value to the stream of information we’re cultivating or not.

In determining how to deliver value and stay relevant and visible in this new landscape, I’ve written down 97 ideas to help you build a valuable platform. Note: some of this thinking comes from writing a new book with Julien Smith that isn’t out until Fall 2012. Want some up front hints? Read this post...

21 Warning Signs You’re Becoming a Social Media Snob

21 Warning Signs You’re Becoming a Social Media Snob | SM | Scoop.it

Ever think you might be starting to take social media a little too seriously?

Sure, it started out innocently enough.

You were hanging out with family and friends, cracking jokes, sharing cool ideas, and having some good old-fashioned fun on Farmville. You know, pretty much like everyone else online.

Without even realizing it though, your perspective began to shift.

The more time you spent on Facebook and Twitter and Reddit and YouTube, the more it sucked you in, and after spending literally thousands of hours involved in online communities, one day it hits you:

Somehow, somewhere, you got… serious.

You started counting your retweets.

You worried about your engagement score on Facebook.

When ROI Represents the Realization of Influence

When ROI Represents the Realization of Influence | SM | Scoop.it

If you want to know more about what is the ROI in social media, you should read this blog post and perhaps also the related book. [note mg]

Vincenzo Cosenza is a new media strategist living in Italy who has over the years, designed some of the industry’s most comprehensive infographics on social media’s global footprint. Recently, he asked if I would write the foreword for his new book, Social Media ROI. And, as I’m a fan of his work, it was an easy decision. As usual however, I asked for permission to share it with you here and his publisher agreed. This is the only place where you can read this in English…

For the record, I also wrote the foreword for Olivier Blanchard’s book, Social Media ROI in early 2011. Yes…same name. I’m not a supporter of the fact that the publisher of this latest book did not take Olivier’s title into account.

40 Creative Examples of Facebook Timeline Designs | inspirationfeed.com | SM | Scoop.it

Few excellent ideas to give a great design to your Facebook timeline. I'll inspire me, to change my profil in the next couple of days. [note mg]

Recently at the F8 conference, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced a massive redesign to our favorite* social media website. Honestly The new updates are understandable and from their point of view provide a better experience for the end user.

From personal point of view, each time they implement a change I get more confused while being forced to learn the new layout. When will they leave it alone? I have no idea. Twitter had a major redesign a couple of months ago, and that was easy to learn. Enough ranting, let’s talk about the new Timeline feature.

Facebook Timeline is a unique idea that has been getting some heat lately. Basically speaking it’s a story of your life that is visible to you as well as your friends. With privacy being a widely discussed issue on Facebook, Timeline completely diminishes that case.

6 Ways To Find Out If You Are On The Google List Of Blacklisted Sites

6 Ways To Find Out If You Are On The Google List Of Blacklisted Sites | SM | Scoop.it

This question should interest every entrepreneur and someone who is active in one way or another on social media. These different options will give you the necessary support. [note mg]

Imagine that you’ve spent years building a business and growing a website. You launch a promotion to email a list of potential customers with exciting new opportunities to save lots of money by doing business with you. Did you email too many people, or did you email the wrong people? Did someone turn you in as a “spammer” to one of the many spammer blacklist organizations out there?

Everyone hates real spammers, and the last thing you want to do is get labeled as one. That’s one kind of blacklist. The other kind is worse – the search engine blacklist. That’s the one that is basically a death sentence for your site because Google and other search engines stop crawling your site or even listing it in search results. No blacklist is good to get, because ISP’s and many content filtering services access Internet blacklists to figure out not only what email to block, but also what websites to block or to mark as potentially dangerous.

How do you know you’re on the Google List or any other database of blacklisted sites?

Influence: What Are Tools Like Klout Really Measuring?

Influence: What Are Tools Like Klout Really Measuring? | SM | Scoop.it

A very interesting comparison of several measurement tools and what they really measure. [note mg]

For marketers, PR professionals and customer service teams, personal influence measurement tools can save time and help facilitate business decisions. Tools such as Klout, PeerIndex, Kred and TweetLevel are being used by brands to rank the relative importance of customers and prospects, prioritize customer service responses, and identify groups of influencers to target with perks and product sampling promotions.

But what are these personal influence measurement tools really measuring? Are they really an effective way to understand which of your customers are more influential?

It is easy to understand influence as a concept; if you can get other people to do something, you have influence. But it’s not at all easy to define how you would measure influence. As Nathan Gilliatt has pointed out, there is no such thing as a “unit of influence” – an observable, measurable event that reflects influence.

Should I Keep My Personal and Professional Identities Completely Separate Online?

Should I Keep My Personal and Professional Identities Completely Separate Online? | SM | Scoop.it

One question that seems to me to be very important. What is the best way to do, here are some interesting ideas about it. [note mg]

Dear Lifehacker,
I'm a pretty savvy person when it comes to getting my work on the web where people can see, but all this talk about Facebook passwords and things has me re-thinking my personal/professional boundaries. Should I set up completely separate accounts for my personal life and my professional life, or is that kind of misleading? How can I juggle privacy and openness, especially if I want to make a name for myself and get hired?
Sincerely,
Camera Shy

Dear Camera Shy,
Well, there's no clear yes or no answer here, and what's best for you will really come down to how much you want a potential employer to be able to find out about you. Balance that with exactly how strong your desire for privacy is, and you'll know where you come down on this issue. There are some ramifications to going either way though, and a comfortable compromise in the middle may work best for you—let's dig into that a bit.

What if your Twitter conversations could expand to include more people from your online community?

Now you can thanks to embedded tweets, a new feature from Twitter.

Sharing Tweets Outside of Twitter

Embedded tweets allow you to take a tweet or a conversation and post it on your website or in a blog post. You can use this feature to share your Twitter conversation with a larger audience.

But more than that, the embedded tweets have interactive features. From an embedded tweet, a visitor to your website or a blog post reader can:

Reply to the tweet and join the conversation. Share the conversation with their Twitter community using retweet. Mark the tweet as a favorite. View the Twitter profile of the tweet author. Follow the tweet author. View tweet replies by clicking the tweet date.

52 Questions To Ask When Hiring A Social Media Company

52 Questions To Ask When Hiring A Social Media Company | SM | Scoop.it

As a specialist in social media you should be able to answer these 52 questions ... and if you are looking for a company that will take care of your social media, you should ask them... there's a lot of work ahead! [note mg]

Confession time: I have a really hard time getting started. There’s just something about those awkward first steps that makes me delay projects as long as I possibly can. For example, last month I finally fixed the check engine light in my car so that I could get it inspected. It was actually pretty excited since the light had been on since October.

Of 2008. I wish I was kidding.

It’s not that I’m irresponsible, that I don’t value my safety or even that I didn’t know I was potentially creating a bigger problem – it’s that taking the first step and committing to something is scary. And it’s especially scary if you don’t know where to start. Because the not knowing makes you feel dumb. And no one likes to feel dumb.

10 Rules For Writing A Compelling 'About Me' Page | SM | Scoop.it

The advice from this post will give you some interesting insights to know how to write a compelling 'about me' page and bio for your website and online profiles. [mg]

Writing the perfect pitch and crafting a compelling bio is difficult. That’s why whole industries exist to enable us to tell our stories better. Copywriters, creative directors and brand strategists like me wouldn’t exist if it was easy to articulate the essence of what we do, and communicate how and why we do it.

There’s no way around it, you need to spend some serious time and energy on your about page, because it’s probably one of the most visited pages on your website.

Without The Right Message, Twitter Is No Better For Your Brand Than A Fax Machine

Without The Right Message, Twitter Is No Better For Your Brand Than A Fax Machine | SM | Scoop.it

A great lesson in humility... I think this article touches the major problem of social media, too much blah blah and personal promotion and not enough real useful information for all. It's to each of us to finding the right ratio between the two... I have an idea about that, and you? [note mg]

Why brands have this endless fascination with social media is one of the more fascinating phenomena in business today--especially since many are missing the one key ingredient that, if ignored, will turn their most choreographed efforts into social media hell.

When it comes to branding and the ever-changing social media phenomenon, you’re not a mushroom. In other words, you shouldn’t be kept in the dark and fed a pile of...well, you get the idea.

Every once in while, a certain business mania surfaces. As you saw in the video above, history is filled with these blips: The telephone. Radio. TV. The fax machine. The Internet. And now social media. Within social media, it splinters further--it seems like there’s always a shiny new network. Before Pinterest, there was Google Plus. Before Google Plus, well, you know the drill. And on and on.

The definition from "Content Marketing" is to create and shares useful narrative information to engage prospects, current customers and the public. I think each business owner should be interested to do so. [note mg]

Is your content marketing social media shareworthy? Yes, this article goes to the points that can be painful for anyone who is active on social media. I read this post with interest and I could see that the solutions proposed are logical but very useful. [note mg]

You may love social media, but even the biggest fans of the social web will find some sources of frustration. What is your social media pain point? I thought I'd explore some of the main ones I've identified and offer up some potential solutions.

1. Managing Your Profile and Reputation

So many networks, so many different audiences and connections. Maybe you’re feeling like you have split personalities: being professional on LinkedIn, running at the mouth on Twitter, then letting your hair down on Facebook. But wait! You forgot that you’re connected with your boss or your client on Facebook. Panic ensues. Or what if someone is Googling your name before interviewing you for a job. What will they find? Over the last 10 years, we’ve all learned some tough lessons about what it means to be digital.
