How to Use Hashtags on Twitter: A Simple Guide for Marketers

How to Use Hashtags on Twitter: A Simple Guide for Marketers | SM | Scoop.it

A simple guide to understanding how to effectively use Twitter hashtags in marketing and how you shouldn't! [note mg]

Every time we host live webinars (and as this long list suggests, that is quite often), quite a few attendees get confused about what to do with the hashtag we provide. What is it? What does it do? How do you create one? Let me explain!

What is a hashtag?

A Twitter hashtag is simply a keyword phrase, spelled out without spaces, with a pound sign (#) in front of it. For example, #inboundchat and #ILoveChocolate are both hashtags.

What does a hashtag do?

A Twitter hashtag ties the conversations of different users into one stream, which you can find by searching the hastag in Twitter Search or by using a third-party monitoring tool such as HootSuite.

Is Your Content Worthy of a Like, Share, Pin, Retweet, Google +1? | Social Media Today

Is Your Content Worthy of a Like, Share, Pin, Retweet, Google +1? | Social Media Today | SM | Scoop.it

This is a question that each person active on social media should ask himself a day or another. Have you ever thought? [note mg]

How many hours have you spent adding buttons, gadgets and widgets to your new blog or website? You research the right tools, share buttons, share bars, analytic tracking tools and more. You install them with a hope and a prayer that someone somewhere is going to use them.

However, unfortunately many business leaders find they don’t get used. The share buttons sit on their site with the lonely zero or default +1. Chances are your pocket book or wallet might be feeling a little lonely too.

What if you took the same time you spend on the share bars, share buttons and tools and instead first focus on something worthy of a share? I know it sounds like a crazy concept because after all it’s far easier to focus on the bright shiny objects, geeky tools and data analytics.

Trust me, I am a data junkie and could literally spend all day helping my clients dig into the heads of their target audiences with a goal of embedding their brand in their brains!

Is your content worthy of a share?

97 Ideas for Building a Valuable Platform

97 Ideas for Building a Valuable Platform | SM | Scoop.it

The social media world changes daily. We are bombarded on all sides with interesting information, useful as also totally unnecessary. For this reason, I think the words of Chris Brogan are true, he say, things will change in 2012. For this reason we should be heading in the right direction and in the right dynamics if we wants to be successful on social media in the future. [note mg]

2012 is the year where social media oversaturation hits hard. We will scale back on our participation in social networks, and we will most certainly scale back who we choose to follow as sources. This won’t be because someone is bad or good. It will be based on whether the connection with that person adds value to the stream of information we’re cultivating or not.

In determining how to deliver value and stay relevant and visible in this new landscape, I’ve written down 97 ideas to help you build a valuable platform. Note: some of this thinking comes from writing a new book with Julien Smith that isn’t out until Fall 2012. Want some up front hints? Read this post...

The definition from "Content Marketing" is to create and shares useful narrative information to engage prospects, current customers and the public. I think each business owner should be interested to do so. [note mg]

Is your content marketing social media shareworthy? In other words, does your non-promotional content invite readers to participate and extend the conversation by commenting and sharing it with their family, friends and social media colleagues? Further, when your content’s shared, is your brand readily discernable on other platforms or via other channels (such as email)?

To help you develop social media friendly content marketing, here are three examples that use social media to engage prospects and extend their reach along with related content marketing lessons.

5 Ways to Kick Start Your Social Business

5 Ways to Kick Start Your Social Business | SM | Scoop.it

The social business market is changing and evolving continually. Enterprise tools are about integration, fit to purpose and enabling capabilities, much of which will and does depend on current systems.

The line between marketing and HR appears to being redefined as we enter the era of the social business. Whilst a CEO will clearly be able to point to a set of strategic responsibilities for HR, the role of HR is evolving as employee engagement, branding and business strategies blend to create a broader social ecosystem.

Businesses are becoming more open and transparent as the line between customers and employees becomes blurred, communications open and people can clearly identify the match of an organisational culture to the brand promise. Do people act pro-actively in customer service, are they really focused on employee development, corporate sustainability….does this organizational still make sense?

A Stalker’s Guide to Competitive Research

A Stalker’s Guide to Competitive Research | SM | Scoop.it

Competitive research is an area that’s either completely overlooked by a brand, or taken to an extreme level while missing the basic goals that need to be reached. Because competitive research becomes a cornerstone for strategy development, it’s important to research from inside the trees, and outside of the forest.

Overall, brands need to:

Identify what others are already doing in the space, and how successful they are. Identify areas of opportunity and weaknesses within their specific vertical. Identify what tactics a competitor is using to gain a competitive advantage.

What We’re Doing

We approach competitive research with these fundamental questions:

What is their link building strategy? How are they leveraging social media? Identify areas of weakness or opportunity in their strategy (notice whether they’re focusing strictly on their brand, or expanding into other social areas for maximum reach). How all these facets work together: focus on their overall “marketing strategy” rather than segregating them into “search” and “social.” Continuing the stalking with tips and tools. I currently have the fortune to experience two different fronts of digital marketing. Under Plural, I work with brands and, with SocialMouths I mostly jam with small business, personal brands, and bloggers.

One of the reasons I absolutely love this setup is that they are two different worlds in how the social web is approached, how it’s handled and how success is measured.

So I’m here to tell you that, despite the ridiculous budgets and unlimited resources, small business has a huuuge advantage over brands when it come to social media.

As business owners, marketers, and social media mavens, we’re all responsible for publishing content on a regular basis. We publish posts to our own blogs to build our authority and search engine happiness, and we publish guest posts on other blogs to increase your readership and gain new eyes. With all the time we now devote to writing great content, we want to make sure we’re getting the most out of it that we can. And that means taking the time to optimize your content before you ever hit the publish button. Because search engine optimization always works better when it’s a priority, not an afterthought.

I mentioned lists briefly in Part One for the purpose of finding targets but they do so much more. Here are my top ten reasons you should be using lists:

1) The number one reason to use lists: each list allows you to add up to 500 people aka tweeps. You can have up to 20 lists (public or private though I recommend public). I suck at math but even I can figure out that’s 10K people!

Your Place in the Marketing Mix | Outspoken Media

Your Place in the Marketing Mix | Outspoken Media | SM | Scoop.it

As Internet marketing consultants, I’m sure we’d all agree SEO is a vital part of a successful marketing strategy. Online visibility is essential for both branding and conversions. But I think because we are passionate about what we do (and therefore, perhaps a bit biased,) we can lose sight of the fact that SEO and Internet marketing are not the only ingredients in our client’s marketing mix. Print advertising, radio and TV commercials, e-mail marketing, direct mail – for most businesses, these forms of marketing are still heavily used.

And really, in many cases, they should be. We might all like to think that online is the single best way to reach our client’s audience, but depending on their product or service, that might not always be the case. My job as a Marketing Coordinator in real estate taught me the value of multi-channel marketing, and how different channels spoke to different demographics.

A Beginner’s Guide to Conversion Goals in Google Analytics

A Beginner’s Guide to Conversion Goals in Google Analytics | SM | Scoop.it

There’s a reason that when companies call me about SEO, Paid Search, or Social Advertising, we always end up speaking about Analytics as well. The reason is simple. If you don’t have a rounded analytics strategy, then you won’t have a solid understanding of how your campaigns perform. In addition, if you don’t have the mechanisms in place to easily see how visitor segments perform, then important questions could go unanswered. And that’s not good for enhancing your business.

Enter the Conversion Goal
Concepts in Web Analytics can get confusing. You have event tracking, conversion goals, success events, multi-channel funnels, profiles, filters, dimensions, regular expressions, etc. This is one of the reasons that too many companies slap a tracking code on their websites and call it a day. The problem is that an “out of the box” Google Analytics implementation will only get you so far. Sure, you’ll get the basics, but that won’t necessarily help you glean insights that can boost ROI.

If you want to know more about what is the ROI in social media, you should read this blog post and perhaps also the related book. [note mg]

Vincenzo Cosenza is a new media strategist living in Italy who has over the years, designed some of the industry’s most comprehensive infographics on social media’s global footprint. Recently, he asked if I would write the foreword for his new book, Social Media ROI. And, as I’m a fan of his work, it was an easy decision. As usual however, I asked for permission to share it with you here and his publisher agreed. This is the only place where you can read this in English…

For the record, I also wrote the foreword for Olivier Blanchard’s book, Social Media ROI in early 2011. Yes…same name. I’m not a supporter of the fact that the publisher of this latest book did not take Olivier’s title into account.

It’s time to teach that old dog some new tricks.

That old dog I’m referring to is social media.

Sure, you’re already blogging, and on Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Facebook, and more. Great.

But I’m telling you — there’s more to social media than meets the eye. The final chapter on social media hasn’t been written.

When I kicked off my writing business in April, I decided to use social media my way.

I approached these overused networks as if I’d never heard of them. I made my own rules. I set different expectations. You could say I wrote my own chapter on social media marketing.
