Why Most People's Charts & Graphs Look Like Crap | Hubspot

Why Most People's Charts & Graphs Look Like Crap | Hubspot | SM | Scoop.it

Data visualization is a powerful tool to communicate complex information in an engaging way. By visualizing information, our brains can synthesize and retain content more effectively, increasing its impact. But if data isn’t properly visualized, it can do more damage than good. The wrong presentation can diminish the data’s message or, worse, misrepresent it entirely.

That’s why good data visualization relies on good design. And it’s about more than just choosing the right chart type. It’s about presenting information in a way that is easy to understand and intuitive to navigate, making the viewer do as little legwork as possible. Of course, not all designers are data visualization experts, which is why much of the visual content we see is, well, less than stellar. Here are 10 data visualization mistakes you’re probably making and the quick fixes to remedy them....

10 Rules For Writing A Compelling 'About Me' Page

10 Rules For Writing A Compelling 'About Me' Page | SM | Scoop.it

The advice from this post will give you some interesting insights to know how to write a compelling 'about me' page and bio for your website and online profiles. [mg]

Writing the perfect pitch and crafting a compelling bio is difficult. That’s why whole industries exist to enable us to tell our stories better. Copywriters, creative directors and brand strategists like me wouldn’t exist if it was easy to articulate the essence of what we do, and communicate how and why we do it.

There’s no way around it, you need to spend some serious time and energy on your about page, because it’s probably one of the most visited pages on your website.

10 Steps to Creating a WordPress Blog

10 Steps to Creating a WordPress Blog | SM | Scoop.it

Hey there! My name’s Ryan and I am another new member to the SEER team. I’ve learned so much since starting at SEER but I thought for my first blog post I would cover something I have some background in, WordPress.

I am helping to set up SEER’s upcoming blog on SEO for college students and I thought I would share the checklist I go through every time I start a new site on WordPress. If anyone’s New Years resolution was to finally start blogging then hopefully this post will give you a few ideas and tips or possibly save you a headache down the road.

The great thing about WordPress is that it really does simplify every step of creating and running a site. I was in a meeting with SEER’s developer Chris Le and half the time I thought he was speaking a foreign language when talking about advanced site design. I know some coding basics but thanks to WordPress and the plug-ins and themes created around it I’ve built more than a dozen sites ranging from your basic blog all the way to e-commerce and password protected membership sites.

Forget Branded Content, Tell a Great Story - Forbes

Forget Branded Content, Tell a Great Story - Forbes | SM | Scoop.it

"It’s not logical to think that consumers will ever volunteer to watch or share our marketing, so let’s stop making marketing and instead start telling stories. We need to unshackle ourselves from old formats and embrace an idea that has existed since humans first began communicating."

The only piece that's missing in this post is any discussion about the fundamental dynamic of storytelling:  story sharing. It seems the author is still focused on broadcasting stories instead of engaging in swapping stories with customers (i.e. listening to their stories in return).

But one step at a time :) ....

Why Your Content Lives or Dies in 10 secs | Curatti

Why Your Content Lives or Dies in 10 secs | Curatti | SM | Scoop.it

Content marketing is non-interruptive marketing that engages and informs a visitor. It’s gonna work or fall flat in about ten seconds like a great Sam Cooke song - you’re humming along or tuning it out.

You have ten seconds to get the attention of your visitor. The usability maestro Jakob Nielsen’s Darwinian logic is spot on for content marketers.

Headlines drive the visitor into the text; or not! Be compelling.Know your visitor – what do they want to read and how do you educate?...

About to Publish A Post? STOP! Read This | SM | Scoop.it

It used to be that it was just us writer people that were responsible for publishing blog posts. But, my, how times have changed. As business owners, marketers, and social media mavens, we’re all responsible for publishing content on a regular basis. We publish posts to our own blogs to build our authority and search engine happiness, and we publish guest posts on other blogs to increase your readership and gain new eyes. With all the time we now devote to writing great content, we want to make sure we’re getting the most out of it that we can. And that means taking the time to optimize your content before you ever hit the publish button. Because search engine optimization always works better when it’s a priority, not an afterthought.

Before you hit publish on that post, make sure you’re hitting seven important points. They may just make all the difference.

97 Ideas for Building a Valuable Platform

97 Ideas for Building a Valuable Platform | SM | Scoop.it

The social media world changes daily. We are bombarded on all sides with interesting information, useful as also totally unnecessary. For this reason, I think the words of Chris Brogan are true, he say, things will change in 2012. For this reason we should be heading in the right direction and in the right dynamics if we wants to be successful on social media in the future. [note mg]

2012 is the year where social media oversaturation hits hard. We will scale back on our participation in social networks, and we will most certainly scale back who we choose to follow as sources. This won’t be because someone is bad or good. It will be based on whether the connection with that person adds value to the stream of information we’re cultivating or not.

In determining how to deliver value and stay relevant and visible in this new landscape, I’ve written down 97 ideas to help you build a valuable platform. Note: some of this thinking comes from writing a new book with Julien Smith that isn’t out until Fall 2012. Want some up front hints? Read this post...

How To Find Royalty Free Images That Haven’t Been Overused

How To Find Royalty Free Images That Haven’t Been Overused | SM | Scoop.it

I don't know you, but for me, images are very important. A text without an image, is like a sky without stars. For this reason, I like this post with several ressources, maybe you too! [note Martin Gysler]

“Hey, I’ve seen that image before. Actually, I’ve seen it many times before.”

Images allow you to express what words can’t.

They draw the viewer in and elicit an emotional impact, providing your users with information while confirming that what your selling or promoting is real.

There are many affordable options available to purchase stock photography. This may be a blessing or a curse. Affordability often comes at the cost of originality.

It’s important to consider your ideals and the image’s ability to illustrate a concept perfectly. But consider originality as well. You wouldn’t want to fall into the trap of using cliche imagery because it’s easy and convenient.

Your “How-To” Post Will Fail If You Don’t Use These Techniques

Your “How-To” Post Will Fail If You Don’t Use These Techniques | SM | Scoop.it

Gone are the days when you could write a simple “how-to” blog post and rank in the top search results. Why is that? Two very good reasons.

First, all of the general and highly-competitive posts like “how-to blog” or “how-to find a roommate” are already written.

The other reason is Google Panda. Remember Google’s update this past year that took down a lot of the content farms? That algorithm was designed to penalize short and shallow articles and reward high-quality content.

Now, I’ve got good news and bad news for you.
