The Old Vine Festival is a top tourist culinary-wine-cultural festival in Maribor, the biggest tourist event in autumn. Over 500 participants were recorded this September. The next event will take place on 13 September 2013. The Old Vine Festival is the main happening in the cycle of events From Vine to Wine, from pruning to St Martin’s Day celebrations, which in Maribor we prepare in the honour of the Old Vine, the oldest vine in the world. It was planted more than 400 hundred years ago infront of a house on Vojašniška street in Maribor. The vine is documented by two pictures dated 1657 and 1681 (kept in museum in Graz, Austria). The Old Vine is Maribor’s greatest ethnographic sight, which symbolises the rich wine culture of Maribor and Štajerska and is at the same time a starting point and finishing point wine roads, which intertwine the hilly town wine growing district.

Raziskava v okviru doktorske disertacije Primerjava paremiologije v slovenskem in slovaškem jeziku na osnovi paremiološkega optimuma. Matej Meterc has launched a survey on knowledge and use of Slovenian proverbs. The questionnaire will be available online for several months. The respondent may accede to it at any time, save his answers and come back as many times as he wants, until he comes to its end. In an accompanying text some short-term goals (survey and comparison with the situation in Slovak language) and the possibility to follow the research in future. are given. Rodoslovje (Genealogy). One of the new opportunities brought by new technologies is digitalization. More and more of life becomes digital and virtual. That is happening also to the past. Genealogists bring back memories of their ancestors and relatives. Genealogical work can be regarded also as a kind of transfer of archival material to modern media. In doing this voluntary genealogical work is complementary to official projects of archives, libraries and other entities. Europeana is one of those. Europeana enables people to explore the digital resources of Europe's museums, libraries, archives and audio-visual collections. It promotes discovery and networking opportunities in a multilingual space where users can engage, share in and be inspired by the rich diversity of Europe's cultural and scientific heritage. Genealogy societies are invited to participate in its project dedicated to the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War: Europeana 1914-1918: Remembering the First World War – a digital collection of outstanding sources from European national libraries (http://www.europeana-collections-1914-1918.eu/del/D4_1_Awareness_and_Dissemination_Plan.pdf). Europeana is organizing some working days also in Slovenia to digitalize photos, postcards, diaries and other documents kept in private archives. Slovenian Genealogy Society and its president Peter Hawlina are actively participating in these activities. Private collections could be scanned or photographed in Nova Gorica (Library of France Bevk, 28 March 2012) in Maribor (War museum, 19 April 2012) or in Celje (main library, 23 May 2012).

STA, Maribor: A high-profile ceremony in Maribor’s central square, Trg Leona Štuklja, started on Saturday, 14 January 2012, as the beginning of the one-year stint of Slovenia’s second largest city as one of the two European Culture Capitals in 2012. The event was addressed by President Danilo Türk, who is the honorary sponsor of the project, and European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassilou. The biggest cultural project in Slovenia’s history will bring more than a thousand events to Maribor and its five partner cities in the next 350 days that will, the organisers say, culturally and spiritually revive Slovenia. The second Europaen Capital of Culture in 2012 is Guimarães in Portugal.

One of the most popular Slovenia's Medieval Festivals. The forthcoming Medieval Fair (20 May 2012), conceived as an open-air living history event, will try to evoke an authentic medieval atmosphere in the midst of Ljubljana Old Town. Stalls at the fair will be selling medieval objects, food and drinks. The fair will be accompanied by demonstrations of medieval handicraft techniques and nowadays unusual practices such as bloodletting using leeches, medieval dentistry, torture, etc. Accompanying events will also include creative workshops offering visitors an opportunity to try their hand at various handicrafts, and a theatre show featuring medieval buffoons. MyHeritage’s chief genealogist Daniel Horowitz will visit Australia this month to speak at the 13th Australasian Congress on Genealogy and Heraldry in Adelaide.
Always busy, this trip follows his recent participation at Who Do You Think You Are Live! in London. With more than 20 years of genealogy experience, Daniel provides key contributions in product development, customer support and public relations; working with genealogy societies, bloggers and media; as well as speaking and attending conferences around the world. He also heads MyHeritage’s translation department, where he has been instrumental in increasing MyHeritage’s global support for 38 languages (Slovenian included!) for MyHeritage website and software Family Tree Builder.

The Rootstech conference is likeley the most important conference to attend and discover emerging technologies and devices to improve your genealogy research, said the organisers: FamilySearch and Ancestry.com. Many presentations of new developments were seen at the conference. Ancestry.com announced also that they will start offering an autosomal DNA testing in 2012 (Autosomal biogeograpical markers - BGA). As of December 2011, Ancestry.com has more than 1.7 million paying subscribers around the world and is home to more than 8 billion historical records and millions of family trees. It’s not hard to imagine that whey will make a huge splash this year when they offer autosomal testing at Ancestry.com DNA, commented SpittalStreet.com.

The National Museum of Contemporary History has marked 27th of January - the day when the world remembers the victims of the Holocaust - by the presentation of the first comprehensive work about the Jewish community in Slovenia in the period before the World War II. The author Andrej Pančur entitled his monograph ‘The Jewish community in Slovenia'. This work is also the starting point for any further exploration of the Holocaust in this part of Europe. The author deals with the Jewish community in the territory of present Slovenia since its inception resettlement in the Habsburg monarchy. Detailed analysis of demographic, economic and social structure of Jewish communities is presented.
