DEFENDANT 5: THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF GUNNS
Sit back, but don't relax too much, you're about tojoin us on a journey opf becoming Corporate Social Responsibilty Ninjas. Increase your CULTURAL CAPITAL by care factor 100% and join the sustainability conversation. We are making it our business to understand Sustainability measurements and how as a society we can work towards real sustainability outcomes. As direct victims of corporate bullying through an almost 7 million dollar SLAPP (Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation) case we know the bottom of the barrel when it comes to CSR, PR spin. Short interlude: SLAPP cases are a a strategy used increasingly to intimidate and silence critics by tying them up with a costly and time consuming lawsuit. Only 10% of SLAPP plaintiffs are expected to win their case but the years tying up critics' resources and time is often enough to spook and silence. The Gunns20 case is the most famous case of this in Australia. The film, 'Defendant 5: The Fall of the House of Gunns' (expected release date March 2014), is that story through defendant number five's (Heidi Lee Douglas, award winning filmmaker) eyes.
To compliment the film we are developing both secondary and tertiary education resources with both a SLAPP and a corporate social responsibility focus, in consultation with law lecturers from prominent NSW universities. As these projects become a reality we intend to use the momentum to campaign for robust anti-SLAPP laws across Australia.

The Wilderness Society National Campaign Director, Alec Marr’s gravel voice simply said “We’ve got a problem. We’ve just been sued”." - Greg Ogle

Shiraz Visinko's insight:

To keep democracy partipatory we must agitate for laws that protect us from SLAPP suits. Howarth is right in saying that we must band together to prevent political and economic violence and changing the laws which allow this kind of bullying is a great first step.

How To Avoid Being Accused Of Marketing With CSR

How To Avoid Being Accused Of Marketing With CSR | The Reading Lounge | Scoop.it
Now, one might be justly wondering about the so many “different” social norms, standards and codes of conduct. Why, indeed, so many standards if requirements are the same?
Shiraz Visinko's insight:

Is this truly the only way to avoid being accused of marketing with CSR?

I'm imagining that there is a more to effective CSR than a list of boxes to tick. I recently discussed a study of Macquarie University research ethics with the author (unpublished- will provide link when it is complete). It was found that complying with human research ethics requirements did not make a project or researcher more ethical. What made a project or researcher more ethical (and isn't ethics what CSR is about?) is education.

Education that allows stakeholders to engage/CONNECT with the broad reaching and complex issues and problems of conducting their business in a particular environment.

Do international standards have a role to play in an incredibly complex world filled with conflicting values and laws? How do we educate for CSR?

Shiraz Visinko's insight:

The Gunns20 won their lawsuit and won the fight against the Gunns (now in receivership). As the battle continues in the Tasmania forests and indeed across the world for not only the wilderness but for the climate  there will be more lawsuits. What we need now is a movement toward strong anti-SLAPP laws across Australia and the world. SLAPP cases are an abuse of the legal system and a travesty of justice.

Heidi Douglas, defendant number five in the Gunns20 case is an award winning  filmmaker. She has teamed up with lawyers, academics, volunteers and other professionals to bring you the story of the Gunns20 in a feature length film along with an education program that aims to spark a movement toward anti-SLAPP legislation.

Now in post-production you can follow the journey of the filmmakers and development of the education program, volunteer your own expertise, donate some much needed cash to finish the film or simply ask to be informed of film release dates and times.
