How Educators Can Assist Learners in Developing a Growth Mindset

How Educators Can Assist Learners in Developing a Growth Mindset | Skolbiblioteket och lärande | Scoop.it

Coaches operate with an underlying assumption that giving advice to others undermines the confidence and self-worth of others.  Others don’t need to be fixed.  In teaching we need to move to exactly this stance in order to foster creativity in our students–to allow our students the choice, control, novelty and challenge that builds their creativity.

Without the assumption that our students are already competent, imaginative, and ready to burst forth with regular exhibitions of novel and valuable ideas and products, we are limiting their creative capacities before they’ve even had a chance to discover them.

Allan Shaw's curator insight, September 29, 7:26 PM

It remains easy to slip back into the mindset, perhaps habitual, that knowledge is something to be transmitted by the teacher and the student is an empty vessel to be filled. While there is some truth in this stereotype, research on neuro-plasticity, understandings about how learning occurs, and about interpersonal skills suggest clearly that a growth mindset model is more useful for teaching and learning  with children and young adults.

How to be a moral internet citizen on the often-immoral internet

How to be a moral internet citizen on the often-immoral internet | Skolbiblioteket och lärande | Scoop.it
From stolen celebrity photos to leaked domestic-violence videos, we are more tempted than ever to sneak glimpses of others' private lives. When is it okay to look?

Submerging yourself in the daily churn of the internet provides plenty of ethical quandaries, but the past month has put the ethics of web browsing — and, more precisely, the ethics of avoiding certain things — into unusually stark relief. Because increasingly, the ethical dilemmas of the internet era turn not on whether to share, comment on, or disseminate something, but whether to look at it at all.

The key thing is your reason for looking. Titillation, voyeurism, grotesque curiosity — if that's what's motivating your actions, don't look. But if you are motivated by genuine concern and believe that watching will challenge you to confront something difficult, and potentially change your views in a way that is good for our society, then by all means, look. We'll all be better off for it.

Mac Attacks: OS X botnets

Despite efforts by Apple to lock down the Mac operating system, we continue to see malicious software being pushed via torrents and pirated software packages. The increasing popularity of Mac OS X devices is turning heads in the criminal world, making it more appealing to develop malware for this platform.

The increasing popularity of #MacOS X devices makes it more appealing to the #criminal world to develop #malware
Tweet
The closed-by-default ecosystem makes it harder for this malware to successfully take hold of the platform, but there remains a subsection of users who'll gladly disable Mac OS X security measures – especially people who use pirated software. This means that those looking to hijack OS X systems for a variety of reasons know that they simply need to bundle their malware with desirable software (probably in the form of a key generator) to enjoy widespread success.

Due to widespread beliefs about the security of the OS X platform, these systems are also unlikely to have an antimalware solution installed that will flag the infection so once the malware is installed, so it's likely to go unnoticed for a very long time.

I still remember that moment whenever something doesn’t go my way. I remind myself that I am not superman. I am human. And sometimes mere mortals make mistakes. Sometimes life doesn’t go to plan. As a NQT, the first step towards excellence is to acknowledge that you too are only human.

And because you’re human, sometimes things won’t go your way. Sometimes one of the 30 or so other others humans in your classroom – humans who, like you, have home lives which might not be perfect; humans who, like you, have emotions and hormones – might not behave as well as you’d like them to.
