How Can We Connect Teachers to Connected Learning? ~ Digital Is

How Can We Connect Teachers to Connected Learning? ~ Digital Is | Skolbiblioteket och lärande | Scoop.it

by David Quinn

"I realized that if teachers were to get on board, I’d have to make it concrete. I had another attempt to share Connected Learning with Rhode Island teachers at the Highlander Institute’s Blended Learning Conference. I reached out to Christina Cantrill for permission to use an example from Teaching in the Connected Learning Classroom and she was kind enough to oblige. The first example was Larissa Pahomov’s 2Fer project where students wrote two-page position papers that were peer reviewed in Google Docs and then shared publicly on a website."

8 Critical Skills For A Modern Education

8 Critical Skills For A Modern Education | Skolbiblioteket och lärande | Scoop.it

"Pearson sent us this report recently–Exploring the Learning Curve. The big idea here is the changing skill needs for students globally. It is based on this idea of an index–a Global Index of Cognitive Skills and Education Attainment. The report explains:
'The Global Index of Cognitive Skills and Educational Attainment compares the performance of 39 countries and one region (Hong Kong) on two categories of education: Cognitive Skills and Educational Attainment. The Index provides a snapshot of the relative performance of countries based on their education outputs.'”

Critical skills that will secure a positive future, for you or your kids!

WEAC's curator insight, June 26, 11:39 AM

Short and to the point, this list provides great food for thought. DId you expect to see digital literacy as one of the top skills for a modern education?

Audrey's curator insight, July 10, 2:28 PM

These would seem to correlate with Thomas Friedman's    "The world is flat" idea.  Basically we need to value and  respect all human beings as those  people at the bottom of the tree last century wont always be there:

Emotional intelligence (feel things from others point of view).  Communication (learn to speak  another person's language). Problem-solving (Listen to and understand someone else's pain and joy); Team-working (the ability to liaise with others as humans who feel pain, cry, hurt just as you do).

Basically the emphasis seems to be on humanity as one rather group rather than the superficial differences.  The idea is for human beings to leave the savannah.

"But low–frills technology in schools can lead to unintended consequences. Recent researchshows that though “technology has often been hailed as the great equalizer of educational opportunity, a growing body of evidence indicates that in many cases, tech is actually having the opposite effect.”

Children of different socioeconomic backgrounds use technology differently, with varying amounts of academic impact.  Their different experiences have the potential to widen existing opportunity gaps in American society."

Very important findings concerning equal opportunities to learning and studying. And this division of use has just happened? Is there a way to change the direction?

Awesome visual featuring the 7 Signs of Professional Learning

Awesome visual featuring the 7 Signs of Professional Learning | Skolbiblioteket och lärande | Scoop.it

Here is a useful visual from ASCD featuring 7 signs of professional learning. These are aggregated quips from some authoritative figures in the field of education. This visual is also available for free download from this link.

To be successful in professional development efforts we must plan backward, beginning with the student learning outcomes. ( Thomas R. Guskey,p. 10)Just as surgeons see observations and coaching as vital to improving their craft, so should teachers. ( Emily Dolci Grimm, Trent Kaufman, and Dave Doty, p. 24)We have to remember that teachers are professionals who use their classrooms as innovative laboratories and want to engage in authentic learning. (Kristen Swanson, p. 36)Teachers have a great deal of knowledge about their practice and their students that is incredibly valuable to other teachers. (Rebecca Van Tassell,p.76)When video recording is shared in a way that supports each educator's intrinsic desire to improve, it can be a powerful tool for rapid, significant improvement.  (Jim Knight, p.18)Educators must ensure that professional learning networks are more than a forum for sharing war stories or platform for promoting personal preferences about instruction. (Richard Dufour, p.30)When professional development fails to deliver genuine, face-to-face interactions with other people, educators feel cheated.  (John Settlage and Adam Johnst0n, p.67)

Cool New App Lets You Make Futuristic Comics on the Fly | Storytelling | Skolbiblioteket och lärande | Scoop.it
Last week, Pocket Gems’ storytelling app Episode registered its 500,000th writer—not bad for a product that launched less than six months ago. While many of those half-million would-be creators are obviously amateurs, veterans of Marvel Comics and the CW’s Supernatural have signed up to created interactive animated serials, what Pocket Gems CEO Daniel Terry describes…

How Episode works is simple; readers download the app (via Apple’s App Store,Google Play or the Amazon App Store), select one of the available stories—choosing from “Hollywood Crush,” “Campus Crush,” “Rich Witches,” “In A Perfect World,” or “Stranded at Sea”—and follow along, safe in the knowledge that, at certain points in the story, you’ll get to make choices that decide what happens next.

15 Essential Netiquette Guidelines to Share with Your Students ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

15 Essential Netiquette Guidelines to Share with Your Students ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Skolbiblioteket och lärande | Scoop.it

"Netiquette ( net + etiquette) is the code of proper conduct applied to virtual online spaces. This code is dictated by common sense rules ( manners ) and social conventions. Teaching students about netiquette is just as important as teaching them to use technology in their learning. Crafting a netiquette memo for your class and informing your students about the importance of these rules will definitely help you create an engaging, respectful, and meaningful learning environment where collaboration and diversity of opinions are celebrated."
