Teacher librarians transform student learning : ASLA report

The Australian School Library Association (ASLA) is calling upon Australian educational decision makers to employ teacher librarians as part of the solution to improve national student learning and literacy.  The association's report, Future learning and school libraries, highlights the positive role teacher librarians have in supporting future learning within the school.

A summary of key points in the report include:
- a review of the global environment in which modern learners and educators are immersed,
- the educational implications of trends affecting contemporary schooling,
- the means of evaluating education outcomes, and
- key alerts on the critical role of the teacher librarian.

Taking the Key alerts included are-
Globalisation facilitates connectivity across schools to allow for collaborative engagement in the exchange of information and creation of new knowledge for students.
The teacher librarian and the school library are vital agencies in facilitating global connectivity.
Teacher librarians are instrumental in
• the design and delivery of digital literacy programs,
• adopting digital citizenship approaches to exercising social responsibility and
ethical practice, and
• creating awareness of cultural sensitivity in a digital environment.
They also identify, store and disseminate relevant and appropriate information to
support the teaching and learning process; Teacher Librarians assess the quality of
information and customise access to that information.

School Libraries and Student Achievement - School Librarian in Action

School Libraries and Student Achievement - School Librarian in Action | Skolbiblioteket och lärande | Scoop.it

In 2008, Scholastic published a compilation of school library researches dubbed as School Libraries Work! This document contains position statements of the National Commission on Library and Information Science of the US and highlights of school library related researches that were conducted in nineteen US states (from Alaska to Colorado; Ohio to Pennsylvania; Missouri to New Mexico) and in one Canadian province (Ontario). Researches conducted by the groups of Lance et.al (2002); Kuhlthau et. al (2004); Smith (2006); Todd (2004, 2005,. 2006) spanning two decades showed similarly remarkable findings.

Latest Study: A full-time school librarian makes a critical difference in boosting student achievement | School Library Journal | Skolbiblioteket och lärande | Scoop.it

Simply put, students suffer when they don’t have adequate resources—and, in particular, we’ve found that student achievement suffers when schools lack libraries that are staffed by full-time librarians. “Nearly every public school in Bucks, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties has a library with certified staff, which has been proven to increase student reading and comprehension,” notes Kintisch. “In contrast, most public schools in Philadelphia do not employ a certified librarian, and more than 140 do not have a library.”

Kieth Curry Lance's decade long research studies established (beyond any doubt) that a professionally staffed library is essential for student achievement. It never hurts to be shown the obvious truth (over and over again).

When will the decision makers stop the lip service and pay attention to the research? School Libraries and Librarians WORK!
