Hackers are now targeting your router

Hackers are now targeting your router | Källkritik och informationskompetens | Scoop.it

It's time for a router emergency call to 911. You knew about hackers stealing our credit cards from retailers, the NSA spying on anyone who picked up a cellphone or writes an email, and ad trackers watching our every move and purchase.

Hang on, we've got a string of recent reports of router vulnerabilities. Backdoors have been found in NetGear and Linksys routers , two of the biggest sellers. A host of other brand names including D-Link, Micronet, Tenda and others have also been the subject of mass attacks that let hackers hijack your browser, produce fake search results, and download malware into all the devices connected to your network.

Yes, it's possible and it's happening. Take a deep breath. Here's what you need to do to secure your router and save money too.

The Awkward 'Privacy Talk' Parents Should Have With Their Kids

The Awkward 'Privacy Talk' Parents Should Have With Their Kids | Källkritik och informationskompetens | Scoop.it
Parents across the world today need to have a new conversation with their kids. No, it’s not about behaving in class, not talking to strangers, or having sex. But in so many ways, it's just as important. It’s data permanence. How we can preserve our reputations in the digital era?

It’s a conversation that will look very different in different parts of the world. In some places, kids will have to think twice before posting photos of teenage escapades, given how such photos may look to others in a professional environment even many years later. In other places, kids will have to be careful of posting any items that may “dishonor” them or their family in some way.

In still other places, kids will have to think about whether what they post on sensitive political, ethnic, or religious issues may define them long after they have changed their views.

Nancy Jones's curator insight, March 5, 9:05 AM

We have been having these types of important discussions with our students in digital literacy classes. What is interesting to note is that it becomes a parent piece that often schools have to provide to help them keep up with their children and  the good, bad and the ugly of technology.

Noeline Laccetti's curator insight, March 5, 9:47 AM

Data permanence must be addressed with ALL children, and well before the "sex talk"

Jenny Ritchie's curator insight, March 5, 7:36 PM

New technologies have exposed behaviours of young people which have put their future success at risk.  Are these new behaviours created by the opportunities that are provided by new technology?  Or are these behaviours that would have been typical of young people even without the technologies they use as a vehicle to display them?

The Internet of Things – a new cybercrime target. | Källkritik och informationskompetens | Scoop.it
The benefits that the Internet of Things can bring are numerous, but so are the concerns that it can facilitate cyber attacks.

As we are entering the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), our homes are becoming increasingly populated by devices that are connected to the Internet in order to share information with each other and the external world more easily.

Ranging from smart phones and smart TVs to motor-cars with 4G and Wi-Fi, from automated household appliances to sophisticated business tools, this web – connected smart devices are collectively known as the Internet of Things.

According to a Ciscoreport, it’s predicted that 50 billion objects worldwide will be connected to the internet by 2020.

Shouldn’t WE Have A bit Of Paranoia Anyway!?

A good question back, isn’t it? My direct answer to this would be, YES! A healthy paranoia attitude, why!? Let us try to go a bit for Deep-THINKing if YOU permit  Let us ALSO try to make a comparison between the Real-World and the Virtual-World (the internet). WHEN YOU take the time to compare both worlds YOU would find out that there really few differences, apart that the internet is technology driven and that WE connect global on instantly actions…

19 Year old wins UK Cyber Security Challenge | Källkritik och informationskompetens | Scoop.it

This week a 19 year old Cambridge student, William Shackleton, took the much coveted title of UK Cyber Security Champion.

.

The 12 month contest tasked the 41 finalists with protecting the UK critical infrastructure from cyber attack.

.

Jointly devised by experts from BT, GCHQ, Lockheed Martin, Juniper Networks and the National Crime Agency, the final event was held this week at the Churchill Cabinet War Rooms.

.

Finalists were selected over the course of a year in which they had to undertake face-to-face cyber battles.

.

In the final task teams worked together to investigate and stop a simulated attack which first struck on the financial district, then the transport network, utilities and finally a nuclear reactor.

Study: One New Identity Fraud Victim Every Two Seconds | Källkritik och informationskompetens | Scoop.it
Javelin Strategy also reports that one in three people who received a data breach notification in 2013 became a victim of identity fraud.

According to the results of Javelin Strategy & Research's 2014 Identity Fraud Study, there were a total of 13.1 million identity fraud victims in 2013, or one victim every two seconds (h/t Dark Reading).

That's an increase of more than 500,000 fraud victims over the previous year, and the second-highest number since the study was launched in 2006 -- in 2009, the study reported 13.9 million identity fraud victims.

Students enlisted to tutor others, these researchers have found, work harder to understand the material, recall it more accurately and apply it more effectively. In a phenomenon that scientists have dubbed “the protégé effect,” student teachers score higher on tests than pupils who are learning only for their own sake.

But how can children, still learning themselves, teach others? One answer: They can tutor younger kids. The benefits of this practice were indicated by a pair of articles published in 2007 in the journals Science and Intelligence.

The studies concluded that first-born children are more intelligent than their later-born brothers and sisters and suggested

===> that their higher IQs result from the time they spend showing their younger siblings the ropes. <===
