A few good scoops for us « NeverEndingSearch | Källkritik och informationskompetens | Scoop.it

I’ve been talking a lot about curating for and with students lately. As the curation movement gets stickier, more and more librarians and educators are joining.

So I tasked my very able practicum student Chrissy Sirianni to help me pick some Scoop.its to share, offering a taste of the kind of current awareness the tool provides for school library professionals.

As you know, there are many different kinds of pilots: private pilots, helicopter pilots, captains of airline transports (for the record, my brother is an airline transport pilot).

Reduce Information Noise Through Social Curation and Collaborative Discovery: Calm Technology

Reduce Information Noise Through Social Curation and Collaborative Discovery: Calm Technology | Källkritik och informationskompetens | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Among the five digital trends presently shaping the consumer experience economy, according to Macala Wright who first wrote about this on Mashable, there is one that has as its key objective the reduction of "information noise", distractions and approaches to digital communication that make it harder to grasp and understand a message or to complete a key task one is after.

It reads like there is more to information curation than people scanning feeds and selecting relevant items to write about.

From the original article I have extracted a few passages: "Calm technology refers to applications that cut down on the digital noise of high-volume data to show the user only enough information that he or she needs to complete a task.

...It refers to technologies that do not disrupt our workflow.

The whole idea is to reduce distractions to our work flow without losing functionality.

Calm technology fights against many of the principles of digital marketing: instead of screaming for attention with flashing banner ads, technologies and applications politely take a backseat to the user’s primary focus...

...

Examples of calm technology can be found in the growing popularity of social curation and discovery.

Social product discovery sites such as Lyst, Mulu.Me, Buyosphere, Svpply and Discoveredd are essentially social filters that enable their communities to curate the products that are most relevant to them.

Moreover, the rise of interest networks and the idea of following someone who has similar likes and shared interest topics are examples of the principles of calm technology driving user behavior.

Google Circles, Pinterest and Chime. In, even location apps such as Sonar, Glancee and Highlight, can all be classified under the “term interest network.”

Excellent reading. 8/10

Teachers Guide on The Use of Graphic Organizers in The Classroom

Teachers Guide on The Use of Graphic Organizers in The Classroom | Källkritik och informationskompetens | Scoop.it

Gone are the days when planning and thinking were done mainly by pen and paper.Technology have made it pretty much easier to think in different other ways. Free mind mapping , brainstorming and concept mapping applications are ubiquitous online and more and more teachers are using them . The 21st century education is based , on a large part of it, on the visual output.

The benefits of graphic organizers in education

- Teachers can use graphic organizers to engage visual learners and help them organize their thoughts

- Graphic organizers help students make powerful connections between ideas and concepts

- They help students develop their convergent thinking by providing a framework for the development of new ideas through analysis, reflection and display.

- They also help students promote their divergent thinking by using such techniques as brianstorming to generate ideas.

- They can be used for developing vocabulary skills and improve reading, writing and communication skills.

- Students can easily learn new concepts and think in new novel ways using graphic organizers

- They help students focus on connections rather than words

- Finally , graphic organizers can help both teachers and students develop creative and critical thinking skills.

How Content Curation Can Improve Your Search Rankings

How Content Curation Can Improve Your Search Rankings | Källkritik och informationskompetens | Scoop.it

It's not the first article that points out how Curation and SEO are connected but it's an interesting recap.

To build up on that story and put things in perspective, you can filter that topic on the "SEO" keyword or click here.

Over the past 18 months, we've seen Google progressively change its algorithms through Panda and Penguin to augment the importance of the social signal. Curation also helps significantly in any Content Marketing strategy, which - as top blogger Neil Patel reminds us - is often the starting point to improve your Search Rankings.

A great read that I discovered through Antonino Militello on http://www.scoop.it/t/seo-and-social-media-marketing ;

Curation is going to be a big topic at the TechWeek Conference starting this Friday 6/22 in Chicago. I’ll be speaking at two sessions related to it but there are several others worth looking at as they show how important Curation is becoming as a trend. Not just to the Social Media experts who predicted it, but now also to people and businesses everywhere.

Survey Results Show Need for More Targeted Results When Searching Online for Learning Resources

WILMINGTON, DE, June 4, 2012 – Educators need faster ways to find the resources they are looking for and resource providers want better discoverability on the Internet, according to results from recent surveys conducted by the Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI).

Of the educators surveyed, more than 7 in 10 (72.6%) said they search for instructional resources on the Internet at least several times a week, with 25.8% stating they search daily. Sixty-six percent of educators said they get many “irrelevant results” and 9 in 10 said they would be more satisfied with Internet searches if search engines offered the ability to filter results by standard instructional criteria such as grade level, subject area, and media type.
