Even though this document is based on the Victoria standards for teachers it can and does have application for other states standards. This document is available now on the ALIA Schools website. The creation of this document was originally part of the work undertaken for SIFiL [School Improvement Framework in Libraries].

The Joint Committee of the IFLA Section of SLRC and IASL is delighted to announce that the Joint Committee has been awarded funding by the Professional Committee of IFLA for year one of a two-year project to develop a module of training materials for school library advocacy titled “School Libraries on the Agenda.” Current members of the Joint Committee are: Randi Lundvall, Norway (Chair of IFLA Section of SLRC); Diljit Singh (President of IASL); Dianne Oberg, Canada (Joint Committee Chair); Luisa Marquardt, Italy; Lourense Das, Netherlands; Lesley Farmer, USA.

 

The original idea for the project came from Lesley Farmer. Ellen Tise, then-President of IFLA, met with the Joint Committee in Jamaica in August 2011 and encouraged the committee to go forward with a proposal to IFLA for funding of the project. IASL and IFLA SLRC are uniting their efforts to develop school library advocacy materials that will contribute to IFLA’s Building Stronger Library Associations initiative and to IFLA’s Online Learning Platform. The project is designed to contribute to improving school libraries and to enhance the leadership skills of those involved in school library development in both of the two school library groups.

 

The online training materials will include topic such as association development, communication skills, professional development design, and collaboration and advocacy skills.

A wiki has been established as an on-going work space for the committee. The
committee will begin its work by collecting and analyzing school library advocacy materials available in English, including those developed by school library associations in the UK, Australia, USA, Canada and elsewhere. The plan for trialing and revising of the advocacy materials includes face-to-face workshops in conjunction with the IASL conference in Doha, Qatar in November 2012 and the IFLA conference in Singapore in August 2013. The committee also hopes to test the materials in an online workshop with IFLA / IASL members before adding them to IFLA’s Online Learning Platform.
